hot gear oil smell

Greetings all, have a prob with my 95 GQ manual4.2. When the gearbox gets hot after towing for a bit or a long run I get a strong gear oil smell come in the car if I put the window down while driving. I have no leaks on the box or transfer but do have the usual rear axle weep. Is it possible for the rear axle to come that far forward into the vehicle while driving or is it some thing to do with a blocked gearbox breather or something else?

G day, you should check the rubber boot on top of the gear box and the rubber boot for the gear stick in to the floor. as these split an cause this to happen , cheers.

Check you're using the right oil. The manual gear box takes a lighter grade than the usual and the TCase should have AT Fluid in it. If you've got gear oil in there, you can get the smell.

Where are your breathers running, in the stock spots or modified?
Reason I ask is that a comp truck I used to navi in had them running inside the cab and we would get a strong gear oil smell after a stage once they got really hot.

i doubt its your gearbox.
What it most likely is is your rear axle seals are gone ( more than likely one side only) and you are leaking diff oil into the rear disks. it only has to be a few drops
Cheers,
