another carby question (isn't getting fuel, cut off switch?)

My 88 1.3 Zook started having problems running, which I attributed to a broken linkage on and spring, the one that can be just seen above the heater hose in the top right hand side of the pic. It's a spring activated lever that opens up the (secondary? I don't really know the term) but opens up the second half of the carby when under acceleration. All the plastic bit around the spring had cracked through and was FUBAR. So instead of fixing that, my mate Shaun (Sharkey) had his stock 1.3L carby (from his 91) sitting there after he'd put a chinese weber on it. So I slung him some beer money and went to put that carby on.

Hooked all the lines up properly (visually double checked when he brought his brother's stock 1.3L around one arvo) however it now won't run. Cranks over, and there's a very very faint smell of petrol however it's like it's not getting fuel or something. It just won't fire. Won't cough, won't splutter, won't do anything.

See the circled cylindrical bit that's attached to the side of the carby? I think it's the fuel cut off switch, right. Mine has three wires coming out of it. One's obviously an earth, but it was really short, so I earthed it to one of the screws on top of the carby. Now, when I pulled my old carby off these wires weren't connected by the proper triangular connector, but rather some wire crimps. And they're going everywhere. My question is -- where are these two wires supposed to go to? There's a green and a black from memory.

Any help greatly appreciated as I'm broke this week and supposed to take the missus away camping next weekend for her birthday. Sorry there's no specific pics either left both the DSLR and point and shoot at work

ok , regardless of where the wires go , this is not your problem why the car wont run . that is an anti dieseling solenoid and it only cuts fuel to the idle circuit only.

The original plug for the solenoid should be coming out the harness roughly where the alternator wires come out . You are right to earth out the black wire to the carby , the other wire you can wire to the positive side of the coil so it only gets power when the ignition is switched on. Check it by listening to , or holding the solenoid while switching ignition on and off , you should hear an audible click , you can also feel it when holding it.

take the fuel line off the carb and check you get fuel squirting while cranking , remove the carb and turn it upside down to see if the bowl is filling with fuel , maybe the needle has stuck shut from sitting around .. try tapping around the float area with a screwdriver , or maybe try getting it going with aerostart to eliminate any other issues ...
just a matter of doing a set of tests to eliminate what isnt the problem ...

my 91 carb has a switch that makes contact when at idle, what does that switch do??
