reasons I've heard...

2.5" will retain your engine braking and responsiveness.

3" will evacuate gases better at higher revs (think top speed) and is ideally suited to a turbo.

And extractors I hear are a must, do it once and do it right they tell me...

If the front bit is still ok, leave it, as it is stainless, 2.25 inch and the muffler is straight through. Replace the cannon back running another less restrictive muffler before the diff, 2.5 inch if possible, then over the chassis with 2.5 and a hotdog out the back.
or
turbo now and run a 3 inch

If you gonna run a turbo now or in your close future .. go for 3" .. if not keep some backpressure on 2.5"

i don't know whats wrong with your exhaust but i just wanted mine to sound better so i cut out the mufflers which was alot cheaper than a new exhaust and sounds good too, it would probably be better bigger but it sounds good now, mines turbo...
