Water/air intercooler

anyone gone down this track?
Im thinking of fitting one to my 80. Have done a fair bit of research on this.
If you've done this i'd like to know how it has panned out over time.
Any probs? any traps? reliability?
Why did you chose this over air/air?
Were the gains worth the effort?

Here I fpund some threads with this kind of info .. and in MUD a mate have a Denco kit and reports hugeperformance improvement at any rpm range ..

I have a denco water to air kit (self fitted) on my 1hdt and I will give you
MY opion
Clause .1
I am the worst backyard mechanic in Oz if it will go wrong for me it will
Problems
1. they do not make a kit for the 1hdt only for the 1hz the turbos are on different angles. Denco know about this and are going to make a 1hdt cast intake pipe
Soloution: Use a longer silicone pipe between the intake cast pipe and turbo will bend to suit
2. Cheap clamps for the price
Soloution: Spend the $ and get good ones
3. Bleeding the system
Solution: Place a temp guage on the radiator to tell you the temp if the temp is high you have air in the system
Reliability
Air to Air if you get a hole in the pipe or the cooler you will be sucking in unfilter air
Water to Air spring a leak in the outside radiator/hose loose water still have filtered air and still able to be driven as normal. Water leak on the inside very rare but with a diesel FATAL
Why not have air to air
Simple lag if you have the cooler in front you have alot of piping to push the air through. Then why not put the cooler on top.
Because I live in NQ I would have required a big cooler to get rid of the heat sink affect make new brackets and then cut a hole in the bonnet no thanks.
Was the extra HP worth it
SHIT YEAH
Now to continue the argument of Water or 100% Glyclo (spelling) let the debate begin but I'am 100% happy with my choice
To get it going stay away from water "WHY"???????????

I'm still in the idea of top mounted air to air .. with a down electric fan ( as 4M40 Mitsu engines ) and water mist to the rad order to keep it cool ..
Other option it's the propane inyected .. just thinking in th reliability of the sistem .. if it faild off road youc an bypass it and continue ..

If.....you mount a water to air on any angle that does not have the water outlet at the highest point to let air escape, it wont cool properly, you will be boiling the water to steam in there where air is trapped as turbo runs 100+ at coast, and 200 on boost....
air to air is best for highway only....water is best for all else including 4wding, around town etc etc and lag is minimal too.

ive considered this and the way I think I would set up water/air i/c, I would probably have filler cap incorporated into the cooler core water casing so air can be bled from system as it would most likely be the highest point of cooling system.
I see the advantage of water/air over air/air being that it will cool inlet charge at any road speed, or slow 4x4 work, in most conditions, where as air/air requires high airflow to be effective
At the moment I am thinking. . . .
Subaru OEM water/air intercooler water pump,
modified ebay bar and plate air/air intercooler core,
AU falcon twin thermo fans,
AU falcon ali radiator core, or ali oil cooler core, for cooling in front of stock radiator
Suby OEM pump coz was designed for this application in production car so would expect reliability + available new or 2nd hand,
AU fans/radiator coz I scored near new set for free,
Ebay air/air core coz they are cheap as chips, lots of sizes and shapes to choose from. relitively simple conversion.

the way i can see around it is to mount a reservoir tank just above the ic as the radiator for it would be sitting lower than the cooler for starters. (this would be done if you didn't mount the cap on the i/c top as stated.

has some decent info.
i would steer clear of water/air intercoolers that have been made from air/air cores. the metal is not really thick and study enough.
the Subaru ic may be a bit small......something you will have to check.
a few guys have surfs, patrols etc with water/air IC's and they go great. it realy helps with the EGT's.

had seen it before but couldn't remember what they were called. from memory some heavy reading to wade through, will check it out again. I know these guys experimented with converted air/air cores. Ill check out there conclusions.
Was only thinking of using Suby pump. supposed to be rated at 11 litres/min. Im sure the subaru core would be way to small.
Anyone got any thoughts on using full size AU falcon radiator as the radiator for air/water intercooler system. It would be in front of std engine radiator and aircon core as well. I have some reservations about it coz it may restrict airflow to engine radiator too much, though Im sure it would maximise heat exchange.

I have notice that the turbo cuts in a lot earlier and continues through the rev range
I take it from this you went with glycol? did you use it straight up or mix with water? and . . . .
100% and thats why it is harder to bleed the system
