how it should work: when you pull back you should have both high and low beam on at the same time. when you push forwards the low turns off and the high comes on

i think it is your switch in the stalk, something missing/broken/out of alignment. if was relay or even wiring/fuse the the high beams wouldn't come on at all

cheers

the 40s have a stupid reed switch (which is usually reliable), but it has 2 small copper "reads" with a little copper point on the ends which touches a connection between the two when you push the stalk forward or hold it back. These are subject to corrosion, or the mounts may be bent or broken which is unlikely. Just pull the plastic surrounds and run some emery paper between them. You will see what i mean when you pull it to bits. Sounds like the only thing it can be.

when i first got my 87 4runner when i tried to turn on my high beams all my lights turned off and sometimes they worked fine, i read it as being a dodgy contact and just sat and flicked them on and off for about 5 mins. 90% of the time theyll work now and sometimes i still get no light, bit scary all a sudden all the lights turning off but it s gettin better

My 86 4runner did the same thing, couldn't isolate the problem myself (does the highbeam indicator come on on the dash? if so, could indicate that there is a problem other than a switch)

Took the runner to an auto sparky and he managed to isolate the issue to a damaged wire, fixed it within 20 minutes.
