Hey guys iv just baught some recovery points for the rear of the zook.

after i got home i noticed that the recovery point had 2 bolts and the chassis holes dont match up.

what have others don to get around this problem ? did i just buy the wrong points for a zook ? or am i safe to just cut the 2nd hole in the right place ? as i dont wanna weaken the chassis..

some pics would be great.

Cheers

Most important to use a thick backing plate.
Don't just rely on chassis thickness.
These may be irrelevant to yours, as mines a bobbed lwb that had no holes.
I just drilled two new holes.

that looks just like what im trying to do.

is that backing plate welded onto the chassis ? or is it just botled on to stop the chassis sheel ripping ?

thanks for the reply man .

Not welded, just used like a giant washer.
Having the hook Up the right way may be nicer, but
I didn't have that option.

Vicelore, don't pay any attention to Christover, he's leading you down the garden path.

He has a LWB, so he has open chassis ends. On your WT SWB, you have a tubular crossmember that runs though the chassis end and will stop this solution working for you.

Get a hunk of 10mm or 1/2" plate, drill two 12mm holes to match up to the two holes in the plate the shackle hanger is welded to, whch site at the very end of the chassis on each side.

Then you can drill any size hole you like in the thick plate to slip a shackle through.

Sorry I don't have a photo but this is quick and easy and sits just in under the bumper when finished.

Yep, I enjoy misleading people
But thats reminded me, the rear nut was a bugger to get on, due to the cross member, and I also had to trim the bolt down to clear cross member.

hrmmm steve. im not exactly sure what u mean.. sorry are the hooks in the same position as chris1s ?

i did think that the back of mine looked fairly simular to chris`s.

would his way work but yours just achives a better approach angle ?

are u using hooks like these ??

I knew this was going to happen :oops:I don't have any good photos of this.

Below the LHS taillight of this car you will see a little plate. This is the plate I made. It's bolted to the chassis using the two holes in the chassis plate behind the shackle hanger. The plate has about a 40mm diameter hole in it and that's the recovery point.

Image

You can see the chassis plate I am talking about on the green car because it has the bumper off. This has 2 12 mm holes in it. one is in the bottom of the chassis rail and the other is almost exactly behind the shackle hanger. tHe factory actually fitted bolted tie downs in some cars to these holes, and they are also the holes the tow bar bolts to on WT cars.

I have looked for a long time at the back of a sierra chassis and there isn't really anywhere to put "normal" tow hooks on one unless you have a LWB.

Hope you can make sense of this.

here is another view, should work on NT as well

Image

you can drill the chassis like christover on a NT but the rear nut is hard to get on and on a WT the shackle can hit the hook, not the strongest place to put it either

Thanks Zooki, That's a better photo than I could find.

Not as easy as just bolting a hook on, but not the hardest job either.

PS when I reset Greg's WT chassis to NT spring spacing and moved the shackle hanger forward 2", that shackle mounting plate was perfect for mounting an 80 series cruiser front tie down - all the recovery point a sierra will ever need.

i have my hook on the side of my tow bar right under that spot would this be strong enough

i have mounted mine exactly like christover's
i have NT with 2 inch body lift(so bumper up 2 inches)
had to put a jack under the chassis to lift the body up(flex out sus) so the shackle angle would come verticle so i could get the drill in.
Couple of large washers and mounted the hook upside down.
My hook has holes pretty close together tho, i have seen ones with them far apart so this could be a prob.

I drilled holes about 20mm from the end of the chassis and pretty much right under the rear cross member.
Can get pics if you wish

Is using the towball tongue a suitable reco point, without the ball?

Yes, so long as you don't get hung up on the tongue all the time. Making a shorter tongue might be useful.

Some people disagree with this but IMHO, the load os spdread much better using a towbar.
