EXO CAGES

Hi all

Im thinking of building an exo for my SWB Mav and was not sure on couple of things.

Are they legal in anyway in NSW?

And how far of the body panels should the bar work sit?

Any help would be Appreciated. :D

You generally want them pretty close to the body work, at a guess Id say anywhere between 10 and 50mm.

Depending on your engina you can make them legal ;)

Have a search for exo's in the members section, there's plenty of really nice jobs on here that should provide heaps of reference material.

A1's Vit, Redzooks ute, Zook60's lwb zook to name a few.....

Its MY old A1MAV that it seems he's exo-ing ....... :cool:

Aza , Its a compromise between how far you keep it off body to how well it looks ,,,too far off keeps the bars off the panels when they flex or should I say the body moves ....but looks Grimace .....to close and you can have some issues with the above mentiond rubbing and clunking .....

You will gain more attention with it as obvious ....but yeah a ladder rack ....but a bit more hard to explain the 38''s ...

I think I have a few pics @ wrk on a disc I will upload and show I thik of 2 shortys (a while ago now @ a N/T event) with exos

Thanks Dan any pics of shortys with exo's would be great.

As for explaining the 38"s I wont have to worry I sold them going smaller they were to scarry for me. ;)

If anyone else has pics of shortys with exo's they would be appreciated. :cool:

Yes they can be engineered and yes you can get your 4wd insured with one too. :armsup:

The one we have just built for my patrol is about 50mm from the body so it doesn't rub and we built it to cams specs and have worked closly with an engineer along the way. He was happy with the way we are doing it and is going to engineer that, airshox in the rear, coilovers in the front, X-link and 37s without a problem.

I have photos of the build up of the cage if you want a link.

LIke I have said BEFORE its not the engineering thats the problem ...................... ;)

Its THE BOYS IN BLUE that you have to worry about .....trust me I have recently had a indepth chat with a sargent (sp) that controls Milbrodale area .....on milbrodale rd :oops: ...... ;) ....just becasue its engineered doesnt mean ITS LEGAL :!: ....... :idea: ....

anyway aza will get them up now

There are a lot of people around who think just because the 4wd is engineered it's legal but as you said it's not. But if you get it fully inspected by the RTA then there isn't a thing the police can do about it if they approve it as well.

My Patrol was engineered and approved by the RTA as it will be this time around when it's finished too.

yes but as A1 said, at the end of the day its upto the copper,& if he's in a bad mood, or you push the "ive got it engineered fact too far" trust me he will find somthing to write you up on,mine to is engineered but as a copper mate told me,most of the time there not werth the paper there written on!!!!!!
so still cover your plates when competing or when mags/tv is around

I know both these guys and both cars have been converted into utes.

The green one is the same as it was at Nissan Trials with the airshocks on the rear but has a long range fuel tank added to it now. His transfer gears are in my car now, and the lockers have been removed (as he put them in a Jeep Cherokee that he built with GQ diffs), and the car is now for sale. Its set up well enough to be a daily driver and is very capable offroad so if you wanted something capable that's had a neat chop done on it, it wouldn't be a bad buy.

The Blue one is a long wheelbase ute now (about 116' wheelbase) and was at J7 last year and usually goes in Nissan Trials (I'll have to ring him and see if he is this year).

Both the exo's were built at the same time and did their job quite well but once it was there they decided they might as well go all the way and turn them into comp rigs, so they chopped them up.

This isnt right, If a police feels that at vechile is unsafe he can still defect you engineered or not.

If he / she feels it is dangerous then they can put it over the pits / RTA what ever they want, engineering will not cover you for this.

If it's been inspecked by the RTA then putting it over the pits isn't going to bother you is it? ;)

I think you will find that the RTA have more power in the defecting area then the police do. If the defect isn't warrented i'm sure you could get it ripped up also.

If I did everything by the book got it engineered, blue slipped inpected by the RTA then got booked by the police I can garrentee they would see me in court.

They don't need to send you over the pits, the Police can write the notice out on the side of the road.

One of my vehicles at this very moment has a defect notice on it that needs rectifying. The things it is defected for are all written on the engineers report except the wheels and tyres. They aren't engineers or vehicle inspection experts, so just because it's written on a piece of paper, doesn't mean it's the same anymore and they don't have to prove wether it is or not.

How long do you have to get it rectified and who does the inspection to

In this case. No fine and no yellow sticker. Allowed 7 days from date of issue to still drive on the road at which point it needs to be cleared or can't be driven until that happens.

What are the steps in getting it approved by the RTA?
Is it a sepertate report from the engineers one?
Do you just book it into a local RTA inspection station and they put it through its paces?

We will be exo'ing the mog for TuffTruck. ALong teh lines of this but without the stinger.

The guys that design these in the US can make them removeable, so thats what we will be doing so its wont get much attention driving on-road

Did you get engineered by the bloke in garden suburb (V.T.O.L) how do you guys get your rigs done with the over 2" lift and larger tyres that reflects in the ADR's somewhere, ive got a 4runner that's awaiting new suspension twin cases brakes etc that will be going in in the next few months. do you have a list of the ADR's that have been modded for your setups? alomost all engineers i talk to wont touch it due to being over 2" and having 35's, 38's if i can get them engineered. here's a pic of the same setup exactly.

id be pretty scared to take it to the rta incase they say ur not driving this thing out of here. lol

i had my rodeo engineered through VTOL about 2 years back for its airbag suspension, 4 link, and chassis notch..

Don was pretty leniant back in the day but he was under supervision by the RTA for a while because he engineered a few things that were quite legit.

From what my minitruck mates tell me now, he is all good. Just alot more vigilant in regards to mods..

Mate all i can say from my experience in minitrucks is, get off the net, call an engineer and ask them straight up because thats the only way you will ever really find out the truth!

yeah dude cheers, every other engineer ive talked to so far isnt interested, wont even tell me any one who is... but the bloke at vtol's done quite afew of my mates trucks and rotors, but ive been told i need to find out all the adr's etc that need signing off on due to the mods being carried out, guess il have to try calling hin again.

if your paying the engineer you choose to carry out the cirt on your truck it is his job to go through the ADR's and sign off on them,

when i modded my GQ SWB, i went to my engineer and told him what i wanted to do, we then sat down went through all affected ADR's and worked out what could be done and what couldnt,
