so heres the story. ive come across wot may be a good opportunity to get myself a half decent turbo diesil for my 60s. the standard 2f ive got now doesnt really like pushing my truck around on 35s so im wondering if an old turbo diesil will be an improvement? its a 4.2td in a 45s ute. its actually got low kays on the clock, but did the 45s come out wit a 4.2td? also ive got a 2f petrol in mine now wit a 5 speed. are the gearboxes interchangable between diesil n petrol? i also suspect it may be a natural motor thats been turboed, though i cant be sure cause i dont know my diesils. should i be catious of that? obviously its cheap so i can spend some $$ cleaning it up, but im just after a few opinions on wot those motors are like, n wot problems to expect wit the conversion. any help would be VERY much appreciated.
cheers

Here in Panama it's pretty expensive rebuild a turbo .. so IMOP it's a must know if gonna be a good deal .. or ( my case ) you already know buy it cheap and rebuild all and get an awesome engine ..

Toyota have several turbo diesel engines .. 2 come to my mind in the 4 - 4.2 range ..

4.0 12H-T a really great engine .. and the 1HD-T that it's actually 4.2 both factoru turbo direct injection.

Both could move you rig with 5" pretty nice ... but I will do a comp test to verify what are we talking ..

Also check oil press, and general shape, turbo axle play ..

keep us posted ..

also on top of that is the 1hz, 4.2 diesel, just though i would mention it as you said it could be a n/a diesel with turbo..

both of the 4.2 (1hz/ 1hdt) will be fine and are a strong motor. will push your 35" easy.

so if i were to freshen it up a little, say turbo rebuild and injector system serviced( would they be the most important things? ) and whatever else i can do without pulling it down and rebuilding it, would u say its gonna be a worthy improvment then? not that im after a rocket ship, but just a little more would be nice. im gonna throw a comp tester on it tommorow. thats the only way i know to get some idea of the condition its in. will keep u posted. cheers for the comments guys.
p.s anyone want a front diff out of the 45?
