Guages for turbo Diesel

I'm goping to AutoSaloon this weekend in Brisbane.

They have cheap guage but no pyro ones I asked about them at the Gold coast show the guy behind the counter never knew they even existed, and still wasn't too sure what they were when I walked away.

Anyway, they should have all the other ones for $30 to $80 autometer as well.

For a turbo diesel what other guages would be good I don't have any guages in there ATM.

But I was thinking of a boost guage or maybe a A/F meter but what would be better for say keeping a check for good running etc.

I hope it's better than the autosalon I went to last weekend. Don't expect to find a vendor there that knows much about what they're selling.
Even the LTSA certification guy had never heard of a factory air suspension system. Even in a rangerover. :roll:

I did see a starlet roll out 235kw on dynopacks though. More than both the subaru's they tested. :D

boost, water temp or oil temp (depends on what you want to use the car for or what sump setup you may have), oil press. and EGT

Make sure you've got a decent fuel gauge, they can really ruin your day. ;)

I have a boost gauge and oil pressure gauge currently.... Water temp and Pyro on the way. :D

Ask also for an Exhaust Temp Gauge (EGT), rather than a pyro sometimes, you will find more that way (for the non dieselites).

Lol, at first I thought they would have some idea seeing as they would be selling them all day long + seeming from a shop that purely deals in selling this stuff to people 24/7etc but I guess that isn't the case.

I have to say I was supprised that the guy had never heard of a pyro guage, if you goto an autobarn they at least know what they are even if they don't stock it in the shop.

Anyway an oil pressure guage sounds like a good guage to start off with.

I have the IMOP basics ..

Oil Pres/Boost/ Pyro

If I have more $$$ and space . . oil temp/amps/water temp

If you have a auo tranny a basic will be the tranny temp ..

I was talking to an airbag supplier, asked him what pressure the airbags can take.
He said they're rated to 200psi. I turned around the one in my hand and saw "120psi max" moulded into it. :idea:

silly question, what is a pyro gauge, and why is it importent to check you Egaust gas temp. one of my mates said the other day that alot of the people at the patrol weekend had them,
not sure what there for.
can someone tell me thanks

A Pyrometer ( Pyro ) it's a gauge designed and calibrated ( with a range acording to probe used ) to read yout Exhaust Gas Temp ( EGT ) it could be placed post or pre turbo ..

But you wanna know the most acurate reading from the probe .. for this reazon you ( or at least try ) in the closest place to your piston ..

Usually in your exhaust manifold ..

The safety number in EGT for me ( Toyota Turbo Diesel engines .. ) in my books it's 1250F

I try never go over this number in my Pyro .. and if I do .. I will try to drop down inmediately before have a melted piston.

On diesel engines, engine load relates directly to increased exhaust gas temperatures (EGT). If you want to get more torque and power from the engine by turning up the fuel, an EGT probe is necessary to know when the exhaust is getting too hot.
Too hot means your pistons and turbo are starting to melt.

Well people I went today and there's about 10 gauges in the whole show for sale.

5 are boost - Apexi Delfi, Autometer.
3 are tachos - mainly autometer might have an Apexi.
1 is Oil pressure - Delfi, this one is $300 just for the gauge.
1 is Oil temp - Apexi.

Delfi is top notch look super great but you need to buy a control box $180 then you buy the gauges ato hook into the control box, the control links up the sensors and stuff.

Delfi is from Japan and they make metric guages with a couple imperial ones on the side.

So what I'm simply going to do is spend the money at a local supercheap to get the spearco gauges, lol :)

Oil pressure - $30 mechanial / $51 for eletric.
Oil Temp is $40

They ranges from $20 to $51 basicly for the 4-5 different ones plus they have 10% off ATM as they have a sale on, so the above might be sale prices not sure but usually it's knocked off the price at the counter.

Show wasn't too bad I should have video on every car and model at this show, I have the same for the gold coast show + last years bike show and brisbane auto salon show.

humm and I'm thinking of becoming a director or something on youtube lol.

I run VDO Boost, Oil Pressure and Prometer guages in my turbo GQ. Pyro is definately worth it, they're available on ebay, thats where i got mine from.
