I touched on this once before. Is anyone running a Roof Pod and basket side by side, or better yet, a pod inside a basket? If yes, can you provide some details?

Thanx

Not sure why you would want to put a roof box inside a mesh basket but theres no real reason it cant be done as long as you make sure it's all mounted securely.

Thule make roof boxes in a myriad of sizes and styles. Just take your pick and drop into your nearist stockist to order it. They are available in narrow widths but tend to be a bit useless unless its for ski's, snowbaords etc.

I don't know what vehicle you are fitting it to but bear in mind the 'Atlantis' has sliding mounting points, so is infinitely adjustable to suit your bar spacing.

The 'Ocean' range uses u-bolts through preset holes on the roof box so you need to be sure you can adjust the roof bars to suit - fine for gutter mounts etc but not always possible when the vehicle has fixed points in the roof (New Prado, 100 series, etc).

Have you considered the roof bags? A good option to keep your gear dry and free of dust and a bit easier to store when not in use. They do need to mounted on a rack or basket though.

Also consider the Rhino Rack Alloy tray http://www.rhinorack.com.au/trays.asp

Exceptionally strong and very lightweight, with the option of spare wheel holders and jerry can holders.

Vague plan is

Aero bars permanently fitted (120 or 150kg models)

XL basket that can be lifted up to carport roof
Pod in basket for bedding (foam mats, sleeping bags etc)
Bag on other side for tent (uses 1/2 length)
Leftover room for firewood or whatever. Can make more room on roof by putting tent in pod

I figure it's easier to keep the bedding dry / clean in a pod as opposed to a wet dirty canvas bag. I know they are waterproof, but loading / unloading has to be easier with a pod.

Having the basket under the lot means I can lift it on / off with a few ropes & blocks very easily in the shed or carport. Don't want anything but the bars for a daily driver.

Sounds ok. You'd need a pretty long basket or a fairly short roof box though. Dont rule out the roof bag too quickly though, there any several different makes in a massive range of sizes that might just fit perfectly inside the basket, leaving the right amount of space for firewood etc.
The rhino rack roof bags are worth a look too.
