i think my viscious coupling might not be working so well therefore thinking of putting in a thermo out of a v6 commodore.
what do ye all tink?

Depends if it's just because it's worn out or are you chasing power aswell on a 2.8 you won't notice it i'd personly just be getting a new one and you don't have to worry about the failure of a eletric fan fitted a davis craig 16in one to a mates lux and done it like this

Clearance on lower pipe

also had to trim nose off water pump just to gain some more clearance as it has ac and will be pushing hard to get air through so we set it up to suck now it runs spot on whatever we want to set it to with the thermatic switch kit which was 50 bucks from super shit
We done this as it ate 2 radiators and 3 fans set up standard foun out why now but at the time it was the best fix for it

Why would you bother? Buy a new coupling, and fit in. Thermo's aren't as good as the viscous fan.

Personally, I'd be replacing the viscous coupling.

On a number of previous vehicles, I have gone down the path of thermo fans.

On my Zook, I went as far as twin thermos, I made wind deflectors to direct all the air through the radiator, it had shitloads of airflow with both the thermos on, but at 80kmh upwards, it would just boil its head off. I fitted the standard fan, and never had any more problems.

How much is a viscous coupling for a 3L or 5L anyway?

$220 for one from Ripco.

Engine fan will pull 5 x times a thermo does. Replace the visco. Thermo will eat electrical power better used elsewhere.
Some visco's can be "topped up" - Toyota sells the fluid.

but don't, it's a waste. if your thermo is leaking, buy a new one. if it hasn't leaked, the fluid hasn't gone anywhere, so nothing to be gained by topping it up.

Worked a treat in my surf. I assumed the silicon fluid had degraded.

might have just made the fan run all the time by being over full? could you head it cut in/out as you drove? It's possible it can work however my experience is it works out cheaper and easier just to replace.

Yep, cycled. I reckon it worked better than my aftermarket dayco one I put on the 100 and don't trust. Doesn't unlock freely enough and car still overheats if flogged. It decouples, but never "free spins" like some I have seen. You can't hear it cycle in / out.
