Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey,

I've just started getting a bit of a moaning noise as i turn slightly left. I have found that grease is leaking out of the left, i guess, ball joint.

Not sure if thats the right name for it but the big silver ball on the end of the axle.

I really should get a workshop manual so if anyone knows somewhere that sells them that would be awesome.

So yeah, Would loss of grease cause this noise and how soon should I be getting that fixed up?

Wouldn't it be a live axle model (ie. no CV'S)? I think I know the part you're talking about, the inlaws GQ is the same sort of set up with the hubs on the end of the solid axle- on a huge ball/ socket type join..... How's that for highly technical!

No it's not a cv because yes it is the live axle version.

So I think what I'm actually talking about is the steering knuckle!

As far as i can tell there seems to be various seals in there which I should probably replace and if I do them very soon there may not be much more to it.

If i left it i would probably end up with more issues and a more expensive solution...


Any ideas how close i might be in my thinking?

Ah first I've heard of a Rocky not having CVs


If you think your car does not have a CV due to it being live axle... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking it to a mechanic for him to fix it. At least he knows what he is doing.

Oh, and on eBay, what a crook, he is selling CV joints for Solid model Rocky's!!! What a con artist!

Its a leaking hub seal probly, must have leaked ALOT to be making noises. I dont think there's a 4x4 on the road (that gets used offroad) without a leaking hub seal. Dirt n crap gets in them and they leak.

If solid axles don't have CV's, WHAT THE HELL BROKE HERE!!!




The only thing I can think you meant murcod, is CV boots, or covers. Solids don't have them cause the CV's all encased in the housing.

Well technically - some solid axle systems use universal joints but most have CV's. regardless of live axle or IFS

Its a minor technical thing called steering that makes some form of "bendable" coupling a prerequisite.

Still I suppose we could all just drive in straight lines ( cue Silverchair )

I meant the part that can be seen externally leaking grease wouldn't be a "CV joint". As the pic posted shows the CV's are inside and can't be seen.

Well I got the term "steering knuckle" from the workshop manual for my model (F75).

It seems that the part that is the steering knuckle is the boxy part that sits around the big ball at the end of the knuckle.

There is a driveshaft as well as a steering knuckle spindle and some other smaller parts such as seals and the like.

It's not leaking out of the hub, it's leaking out from behind the wheel, so when you're looking at that big ball on the end of the axle it's now covered in grease instead of being clean and shiny.

From the diagram I found in the manual it looks more likely to be the oil seals at the back of the assembly.

Not a Rocky expert ( actually not an X spurt on anything ) but thats the grease that lubricates the CV leaking out, and of course letting god knows what back in.

If its stuffed your CV then thats not good news. Don't ignore it, its not going to get any better.

Yep, I vote the oil has washed the grease out of the CV and it's now worn, causing the noise.

Guess I'll have to rip it apart over the weekend and check it out then.
