i was looking at that the other day, and you would need to get the guage for the sub fuel tank which sits with the altimeter up above the rear view mirror.

I am thinking you would need to run light and sub tank power up there, and then re-route the wiring from the alternator??

i dont think a dx has any tacho signal sender... might have to get a sparky to get it running.

I'm also about to rip out my standard instrument cluster due to both fuel gauges being stuck and re-wiring for diff lock lights.

Have been told an GXL turbo diesel? cluster is the go, but not 100% sure.
As mentioned above, there is something to do with injector pump and if we have said sender.

I'll be watching this thread for recommendations because a taco is definately something im after.

why not swap with a mate just to see what works and what doesn't.

I think you'll find that all the wiring will be there for all the different models and types and for all the different extras you can get. Its just a matter of having the correct sender units etc for things to work. For example my GXL has the wiring in it for the factory diff locks even though it doesn't have factory ones in it. Petrol and diesel tacos will be different.

With my hilux I swapped to an SR5 cluster and all works sweet but I do need to change the oil sender unit for the oil presser gauge to work.
Back when I had XF falcons they were the same, I changed from a standard GL cluster (no taco, just the bare basics) to a ghia cluster (full electronic with everything) and the only thing that needed changing to everything to work was the oil sender unit.

Make sure you get a dash from the same year models...ie 1990-8/92 use spedo cable, 8/92-1/95 use electric, but different plugs to early 1/95 to 98 use different layout of lights, and different plugs...
The sensor in the pump runs a tacho....usually a std doesnt have it in the pump, and u will need to buy one, or do the alternator thing.
No std has wiring to the roof, u can do a switch relay so when you select sub, your gauge reads sub....thats the easiest way.

My 92 model does as well and disc brakes allround.
Its an ex SES vehicle so maybe they got a special option?

Im not sure what was not true about my last post, all earlier dx's had roof wiring, stds did not. When is a dx not a std??? there is alot of confusion (justifyable) over the std pov pack with vinyl everything and the dx with cloth and tacho...(b4 u flame me, read on)
Remember back when the GQ could be bought in 4 or 5 trim levels?? the dx was one up on their gov pov pack....somewhere mid 90's, they pissed off the pov pack and made the dx a base model.....Toyota followed suit with the 80....pre 96ish, a dx had cloth and tacho/roof altimeter, post had vinyl pov pack interior.....BUT....Gov depts could still option the extras pack, aswell as the safety pack in later 98 model with twin air bags which was even optional on the 40th annaversary.
So an early dx is not thesame as a later dx unless the later dx has the extras pack...
With the dashes, the diff lock light is on the right side for post 95 and the left side for pre 95....just be aware.

Is this right???

I have a '93 Standard (vinyl seats, barn doors, no tacho). I have a diff lock in the rear which I wired up to light up the diff lock light in the dash. The diff lock light is on the right hand side in my dash.

Can anyone else confirm my diff lock lights should be on the left?

Tom.

Thanks UDM.

Am I right to assume the photo is a pre '95 dash, and so the claim that diff lock lights on pre '95 dashes are on the left would be incorrect?

Thanks,

Tom.

So has anyone changed the cluster over yet? I am also wanting the tacho cluster for my 93 cruiser.

How do I tell if its a Standard or DX? It has vinyl seats but carpet floor and no roof cluster.

What are people paying for a cluster with the tacho, I havent started pricing them up yet?

ok, ive just gone outside and played with my switches, my bad...the early model is as the photo above, all 3 locks are net to eachother under the spedo.....the 95 and later dash has the centre diff lock light under the tacho so u dont get them confused if ou have all 3....so thats why i said earlier on that you have to make sure you get th right dash...the pin orientation of the later dash is different in the plugs....90-95 have the same face, but 90-92 ran spedo cable, and after that plugs changed and electronic spedo.
The std van with no tacho dash has no wiring to the roof but an easy overcome with relay will see your main fuel gauge read the aux tank when so switched.

damn, i bought a 1992 GXL turbo diesel dash (I think its that era-ish)

but i have a 1997 with airbags and no tacho.... so i have no roof wiring, so i went and bought the altimeter and roof mounted fuel guage for nothing :(

oh well

BJ,

PM me with ya price on getting rid of the roof mounted gauges..

Also out of interest what did you pay for the console with tacho? so I can compare when I am shopping around.

Have you taken out your old cluster yet and can confirm that the wiring is all there to hook the new console with tacho up?

BJ the loom for the roof is plug in at the passenger side floor, you will be able to find one if you go to the 4wd wreckers. Also, you should be able to do some fiddling with the dashes...the bits that have the coloured diff lock and srs lights may be transferable to the earlier dash, and then some picking out of wires from the plug...um....no sell it on and find the right one :)

Gday
All the plugs are there...or should i say, all the wiring is but is not utilised in the std dash. The side of the pump that faces the block has a wire coming out of a sensor half way down thats the tacho... no wire, no tacho.
Dont know what Toyota ask for one, but pulling the pump to install it would be worse.
