Hilux - what to check
A girl I work with has asked me to come and check out a 2003 dual cab hilux (diesel) for her in a couple of hours. Any hilux-specific things I should be checking?

This one has 116000km, asking price is $22k. Seems to be quite tidy all over, except that it has obviously spent some time on the beach. I couldn't find any body rust (or bog), but the bullbar, a-arms and gearbox crossmember is a bit scaly, and the exhaust is looking a bit rusty. It isn't too far gone at the moment - but would need a thorough treatment with rust converter and fishoil/lanoline ASAP.
Would you touch it, and how much would you offer.

i honestly couldnt say if it was a good price or not as i have not looked at the market for years. i purchased my 1998 3.0d lux with 45,000km, winch, bullbar in early 2002 for about $29000 (i think).

This may be some help also Q? when gearbox and diff oils were last changed and i think they are a 10 000k service interval but i'd do it every 5 000k (What i write on lube stickers at work) and for a 15 000k service interval go 7 500K

The sharks at the car yard said the log books have been "stolen". So NFI about the sevice history. Which makes me worry.

Why would they steel log books and not the car i'd say there probaly wasn't much stamed in it so they went missing If you could somehow get in contact with last owner could find out old rego number and where it was serviced to get history but Being a car yard don't think you'd have to much luck

Thanks for the suggestion, I have passed it on. But she has already decided to buy it (she managed to haggle a grand or two off the price).
It is a bit strange, from the chassis up the vehicle is perfect and doesn't look like it is been on the beach - it is only everything lower than the main chassis rails that has a nice coating of surface rust (and the odd bit of scale). It is almost as if the truck has been parked in a foot of salt water overnight.
She will be getting the whole truck rust converted and rust proofed as soon as she picks it up.

Sounds like a Water Damaged vehicle to me. It prob came from newcastle. Doig a V check in WA may not give you any interstate history. It may come up clean. Should also add that it seemed in perfect nick mechanically, didn't blow even a hint of smoke under and circumstances, no gearbox whine. Engine was surprisingly growly/noisy under heavy engine breaking though - is that normal?
