87 Pathfinder

My mates got an 87 Pathfinder and was contemplating whacking some 33's on it as a bit of a bush hacker.
What options has he got? He needs it done on the ultra cheap.
How much can you safely wind out front torsion bars without upgrading them?
Will Patrol springs and shocks fit rear without too many mods? Thinking std OE GQ springs might provide a 2" lift or something???
What are they like offroad? Trany, box, diffs, axles, cv's, etc.?
Any ideas. Remember cheap is the key. if it costs money he'd sooner spend it on a trol.
