Hey guys i was looking for some insight into my steering problem.I have a 97 model coily with about 30mm coil lift and a 30mm coil spacer I have just fitted a return to centre steering damper as well I have 31" mickey thompson bias baja claws on 16" rims.What happens is when I am travelling anywhere from 80kph and up the car just wants to skip all over the road when I have pulled it back into line its running off the other side of the road I.Its really scary on narrow roads espescially when trucks are coming the other way.Does anyone have this problem, what did you do to fix this can it be fixed or does everyone have this problem I hope not cause its really bugging me and Im hating driving it at the moment so all the info I can get would be very helpful.Cheers Guys

Firstly check that everything in your car is tight and not worn for safety reasons.

Then.

Have you done any sort of castor correction?

60mm of lift is quite a lot in a vehicle of this scale. 50-75mm requires correction in a vehicle such as a patrol or cruiser where links are longer meaning that lift has a lesser effect on steering.

Your Claws wouldn't be helping too much either, they aren't exactly a performance tyre. That said they do drive pretty well on the road.

Take you spacers out, go for a drive. If all is well, call someone like BBM and buy a body lift kit to replace your 30mm coil spacers. This will mean that you'll end up with 30mm spring lift and XXmm body lift.

try swaping your wheel/tres for another set for a test drive. a dodgy tyre can make a car dart even with good tread. i have a set of 17'' on my vr with good tread & it steers like a bucket, can't wait for them to wear out. i know this was also a problem for my brother with motorway muds.

I second that... tighten the grub screw ontop of the steering box up a bit, should remove some play from your steering...

Cool thanks guys I didnt even think about caster correction.I have tightened the nut on the steering box alittle bit but Im not to sure how far I should tighten it ,can you over tighten and damage the box?I will have to double check to make sure everything is tight and not to warn .Cheers fellas

it is the grubscrew inside the nut that needs tightening... just thought i would clarify...

Back in 97 a mate lifted his coily 6inch springs and untill he fixed the castor it was a scary deathtrap. Btw this zook also went on to feature in funniest home videos

its your castor, your can get replacement bushes to correct... mine was a bitch to steer,

on the caster thing.

is it easy to get caster wedges to suit sierra leafies?
