I have had the same problem with my 1HD-T.
I had the injector pump rebuilt which solved the issue but it has returned again. i beleve it's the cold start settings on the pump.

Could be a glow plug.

Wouldn't be a glow plug once it's started, might be a lack of compression. Compression test it.

1HDT doesn't have glowplugs so you can rule that out.

its a vacuume line from the vacuume pump to the idle up solenoid
or some kind of idle up when cold...
have a look

its actually a crook injector, my last 80 done the same thing and my currant one is doing it now.
i got the injectors done on the last one and it fixed the problem, after a while the pump stuffed up so i got it fixed also (pump was done after the injectors so it eliminates the pump).
also on both my cold start part on the pump has been removed and blanked off so this eliminates the cold start also.
cheers mark

You could be right but I've never seen a diesel with direct injection with glowplugs. They usually have some sort of preheater.
I can't see either in the worksop manual on the 1HDT.

Auto tranny and 1HD-T arounf 800 rpm .. ( netral and idle normal operative temp )
My 1HD-T have Glow Plugs .. here in Panama ( with low temps around 22C in a " cold " day ) we don't need it .. actually the temp sensor never activate it ..
