hey all buying an 80 series 4.2L T/Diesel (1hdt). it runs rough when first started, idling at around 750rpm. Once warm runs like a charm. What could be the most likely cause????

Umm.. being a Diesel?
Could be a glow plug on the way out or similar... all diesels are a bit noisier when cold.

1HDT's dont have glow plugs. They are direct injection.
Either injectors or pump May need attention.
Cheers.

no smoke on start up, little puff of black Diesel, it has had injector pump over hauled and injectors done around 20k ago, if i give it a bit of throttle it runs smooth as at around 950 rpm up. Once running for a little bit she purrs like a kitten at idle!!!!

1HD-T's do have glow plugs, but they are more for cold emissions purposes than cold start.
could be lots of things, I'd start with a full service, give it fresh oil, if the old oil has thickened a bit it might be holding it back. start with the simple stuff. might be a bit down on compression, might have transfer pump issues if it is a higher km engine. Andy will know.

Mines been doing this for a while, rough as guts when really cold, the whole car shakes, rev it or wait a few mins and its fine. I have a tiny leak out the head gasket and put it down to that, could be wrong though.

motor has done 321 000k, oil looks fresh, it runs fine, doesnt feel like its gonna snuff when its cold it just runs rough, i noticed its only running at around 650 when its cold then when it warms up it goes up to 750rpm. is it a simple fix of is it a hard fix?????? i havnt picked the car up yet i get it tomorrow, but if its gonna be nothing but dramas i will back out of the deal!!!

Fair enough, I stand corrected. My 14B had the heater element in the intake, 1HDT's are obviously different to this.

You could try to re-prime using the hand pump on the next cold start!
Just to see if this has any affect
cheers

Is it auto or manual? They have different idling speeds, and this is critical on them. How long does it last for?
Look at simple things first, when did it start?

It manual, it has only recently had the seals done in the fuel pump, im not sure how long its done it, im buying the car and pick it up tonight. it only does it until it slightly starts to warm up, when cold it idles at 690rpm, when warm around 750-800rpm with aircon off. i think it has to be something with fuel considering its only had the pump seals and injectors done recently.

It will be the idle speed then, the idle up on the cold start device needs to be adjusted so you have 750 rpm when cold. Then when it warms up you also have 750rpm.
Beware of a pump o/haul that only required "seals", it refers to a quick/cheap fix.
