Bigger plenum chamber on a 1hd-t

hi

what are your thoughts on making a larger plenum chamber to go on a 80 series 1hd-t engine? does it really make a difference on a diesel turbo engine? i have to change the manifold anyway to fit my water to air i/c.

i know they need to be a certain size compared to the capacity of the engine.

i was thinking of making one out of 3" ally tube, all flowed of course.

cheers mark

Big snorkel, big filter and good airflow are going to be the keys, good clean, cool air. stock plenum should be fine.

you miss the point, i need to change it to fit the i/c anyway...

plus big snorkel, big filter, big airflow, into a restricted intake manifold sort of defeats the purpose of the first things.

just got a std manifold for a 1hd-t from my wreckers for $80.. going under the chop now before i got to go..

size doesnt matter within reason...1 inch tube will be a bit restrictive... 4 inch will be a little too much space to fill and you will get lag...just make minimal turns for air to negotiate...i wish i knew u wanted a manifold...i have a 1hz one u could have owned...

got any 1HD-FT manifolds? tyhinking about going down this road when I intercool, to make the hole face forwards rather than sideways at the top, but not real keen on hacking into a potentially expensive manifold in case it all comes unstuck.

made this for my patrol, got to make another now cause a cant fit a water to air cooler in. works a treat, cant begin to tell you the difference it made to the responsiveness of the engine, really snappy power. i thought i'd loss some boost but beleive it or not it gained .5psi. i did change the point of the boost pressure line but dont think that would make a higher reading.

stock berrma diesel setup.

starting making the new one

almost

stock vs modifed

done

this also works great, 20psi, highmount, unreal to drive, has noticable lag.

what was the question again?

yup still thinking 3" log style.
mate still keen on the manifold you have too, mate needs one.

Its a pity the cruiser manifolds cant be done like that...we have injecter lines over the plenum..ive also been thinking of a 3 inch front entry manifold for the purpose of minimising piping length and intercooling ... the 03 hdfte 100 series has a power steer reservoir off to the side of the manifold instead of up front...having a front inlet also reduces heat soak..

log style manifolds are crap, feeding from one end gives all kinds of wierd air velocity distributions in the manifold, that triangular style one on the patrol is the goods! you will have a much more even air velocity distribution to each runner giving a engine that will be more balanced, responsive and POWERFULL!!

as for volume, all the books i've got are on N/a motors, they indicate plenum volume to start off with should be approximately the engine volume then work from there.

anyone got a picture of the engine bay on a 80ser. i'm sure there is a way around the injector lines.

goes goes way better with this manifold, i want more, therefore i need more fuel, more boost, less heat.....therefore intercooler must fit in there, looking at going something like what is on kevy notts gq

HDFT-E that is, but close enough...there are another 3 pipes behind the crossover that do thesame as the 3 you can see in this piccy...the hdft crossover goes straight over the middle and the tappet cover hump is at the rear of the motor.

just a thought, Why not make a 2pc one like on the ford Au for example using the std 1hd-t for the lower peice and custom top peice and just bolts together

I saw that and thought it was a little high, for me at the moment too...
