'04 Disco Vs '04 Prado

I am considering buying a car for the missus. She likes the Prado and I (of course) like the Disco.
I need to know the strengths and weaknesses of the Disco2 compared to the Prado so that I can convince her that the Disco is the way to go.
All help greatly appreciated.

The Disco is a Land Rover. The Prado is a Toyota.
How much more convincing does she need to buy the D2?
We have a Prado at work (06 GXL model). It has the most uncomfortable driver's seat I have ever experienced.

id throw the live axle business but chances are the prado with independent suspension is probibly a more comfy on road drive after all its designed for a people mover more then a off road beast

That is an interesting point as it is what I expected when I drove the Prado as I used to have a Rodeo with IFS and its front end was great on road for bumps.
However I drove into/through a pothole in the work prado that I have also hit in my Disco1. I was quite surprised at the bang and fuss the Prado made while the Disco handled it better. Maybe the Prado had really high tyre pressures?
The Prado we have is a turbo diesel auto (not sure which engine) and that is very quiet and gutsy up to 60km/h but it is slow to accelerate above that.
Very good visible build quality too as is expected from the big T.
Still get the Landy though.

I had heard that the Prado seat was uncomfortable. The build quality of the Prado and availability of aftermarket parts are plusses...as is the 180L fuel capacity...but no real point having these things if you feel phucked after a long drive
I know about the front "suicide-bomber double cardin shaft" issue with the D2 and would be changing it to greasable whilst the ECU was remapped and 3" mandrel exhaust were going on.
Is there a long range tank available for D2s? And what size tyre is realistically possible with a 2" lift?
This car wont be used for much off-road work - thats what my Fender is for. More of a daily driver for the fairer half and family tourer.

ARB/OOT, LRA and Browns do LR tanks for the D2.
Depending on which you get, you can have from about 140 - 200 litres under the rear, and depending on if you have ACE or SLS you can get 50 - 60 litres under each sill.

I was rear ended by a 05 prado doing 80k in my ser 1 disco and while i drove home and are still driving it while waiting for it to be repaired his prado was written off total front end was stuffed and you can only notice my car by the bent rear bumper/step i was stationary at a set of lights when he hit me

My sister has a fairly new Prado, the kids get car sick in the third row of seats as the airconditioning does not reach them, if she was aware of this they would have got hthe later model with the split system. I have a 1990 rangie and find it better to drive, the prado feels more rear wheel drive rather than 4wd. Can't comment on the disco, always had rangies.

we have a 05 Prado at work, a turbo diesel and have to agree with the seat comment, almost as bad as the standard Triton seats. Yes the engine is quiet and willing unless you are towing, and then it simply runs out of powers, having to be flogged mercilessly to tow anything of any substance (eg., 18 foot tinny) at any decent speeds - whereupon it guzzles fuel at an alarming rate and sounds like it will grendade one day. Fleet car, so who cares? Good resale value though due to the Toyota "it must be good" marketing and soccermum attraction - not too big but big enough to make a statement that "I am not locked into suburbia and I can escape to the wilderness any time".
Given the work unit tows a lot, the next vehicle will not be a TD Prado, but either a petrol V6 or a Landcruiser/Patrol. Can't buy LRs, so that's a shame:(
Prado design is definetely targetted at the soccer mums or urban cowboys and quickly shows it's design compormises on country roads where the suspension crashes and bangs and the engine lacks power and torque, making it frustrating to drive over any distances.
Compared to LR? I would say the LR ride and comfort and driveability over long distances is better and purchase price is lower. Of course LR re-sale value will be lower and perhaps maintenance will be a little higher for the LR (though having bought Toyota parts and seen the Yota service bills, perhaps not).
Personally I prefer the LR becasue I am tall and the Yota seats and seating position is a PIA, and the engine is more willing.

You need 180 ltrs in the playdoh, they suck the diesel down, mate has an 05 td and he is lucky to get what i get from 88 ltrs ! -mind you its his wifes car and she only goes to the local shopping centre in it.

My TD 5 was chipped and would easily beat a v8,while getting 12l/100k a
round town with the trailer on.
split climate control aircond
traction control good on the rrocks or wet roads
Just remember that after150000km it can cost big bucks like injectors $1800 each
damn nice to drive
character that the prado will never have.

I've had the 03 Prado TDI and now an 01 Disco TD5. The Prado was good, and yes very uncomfortable driving position, I do up to 35000 clicks a year and for a basic seat in the PlayDoh, no lubmar support etc on standard or even GLX model, I suffered with back problems till I got the Disco. This is my second Disco and I love it. More grunt, better driving posy,sounds gutsier & handles well. The PlayDoh was a fine vehicle, but Toyota service was nothing to write home about. But if you want a car for the missus, need to carry 8 passengers,drive long distance (hence long range tank), the PlayDoh is the one to be seen about town in......but I'd still go the Disco.

Oh hey, I forgot to add......
My Prado, even though it was an ok car, just didn't have the same drivability that the disco has. It suffered hugely from turbo lag when you sink the boot. The TDi needs to be serviced every 5000km!! they won't tell you that when you buy it, the Jap diesel motor produces soot like no other(black as night).....the oil in the disco hardly gets over a mid to dark transparent brown.
Apart from that, it sucked when I resold it for a lot less than what I thought i'd get after 3 years. Anyway, that's my bitch.
Buy the Landy!

Go the disco especially if you like off-road (if you didnt you wouldnt be here).
You should get much better value and with all the wizz bang stuff on a later model it is well tried and trusted. Just make sure you get one with a diff-lock.
Despite what some people may say the prados ifs is a real pain off-road and they are not as robust as you might think (even with the big T behind them).
Both cars will take 32's but will need a bit of loving for 33s.
Also a basic 2 inch lift on the disco can be had for around $300 for a set of springs and around $1,500 for the prado....etc.

No...took me 2 years to buy my Rangie, mod it, buy my bobcat and excavator, go to Europe, get married, and a heap of other shit before I could finally wear her down and brainwash her into thinking that Prados are shit
I am calling a yard tomorrow about an '04 7 seater. Its a V8...but the purchase price may be too good to pass up.

Ok Guys WTF is going on with discos around this age
Seems they are selling like hot cakes! Petrol and TD5s.
Obviously we all know why we should buy a rover but why the fark is everyone else buying them now?? Have we finally got thru to all the 10 inch lifted cruiser / nissan boys with there 33s that there is a better way
Anyways Good to see there is a demand for them. Maybe it is the fact that they are a damn good car and have just fallen into a real obtainable price bracket.

If you are trying to sell a disco to a woman I would point out:
Cruise control on all models as std
dual climate control
nice stero with steering wheel controls
high seating position
compact vehicle with easy to see corners but plenty of room
child seat restraints on all rear seats
just to start with....
Do not forget to replace the steering bump stops with the 21 mm stops rather than the 27 makes it much better to steer in car parks

Tried all of that and it didn't work...so I just belted her and now she agrees with me.

2: My 04 Playdoh Grande has lumbar support and is bloody comfortable to drive, plus the 4L V6 petrol (diesel also sucks balls) is quite fun to drive.
