80 series gearbox

father in laws 80 gettin hard to put into gear anybody no where abouts to take it or what the prob could be,any help would be greatly appreciated.

could be a synchro, try running a lighter oil and maybe some aftermarket lubrication stuff?

try puting castrol VMX80 in it may help a bit

will be the synchros, i cannot select 1st gear without comeing to a stop myself

Gears are expensive so i hope he hasnt been crunching them too much requiring new one/s.
I'm haveing my gearbox done next week, just reco the whole thing and replace pinion seals and uni joints while your at it?
looking at 1800-2200 for full gearbox reco depending on who you take it to.

Make sure you have 75/90 gear oil in the gearbox
80/90 gear oil will give you hard shift especially when cold

thanks heaps for the help guys he said himself that the synchros are prob the drama said he was told by a bloke at work fairly easy to get to something about open here slide out & replace or was this fella full of it.can any body confirm this.thanks also we'll try different oil see if that does the trick thanks again.

When is it hard to get into gear, from standstill, between changes, which gears??? could be as simple as the clutch dragging.
The oil to try is Castrol VMX-M <--- don't forget the "M".

Hi mate had the same problem in mine, new syncchros and bearings cost was $1500, but still having trouble changing back to 2 when the gear box is cold

clutch seems fine . might have to try some new oil, think i have the 75/ 90 in it.might try the castrol so is it the vmx80 or the vmx-m thanks Troy

I changed my gearbox oil to VMX-M 75/85 in my 80 series, much better when cold. It may not be ideal if you are towing as it is GL4 rated. cheers

apparentlt theres a ball on the gear stick that get worn making it hard to locate gears is what one of the gearbox mobs reckon $25 to fix he was taking his car to the fella to see if that was it still havent heard if he did or not will post up outcome.thanks for all the help.cheers

I am using this oil in mine also, has made an incredible difference.
Was ready to do a gearbox rebuild. Changing 1-2, 2-3, 4-3, 3-2 , 2-1 was a biatch before with new oil as per toyota spec.
Tried the castrol oil as last resort. Now shifts easily into every gear. VMX-M is the same grade as toyota specifies just a little thinner.
I have been told toyota changed to a thinner oil after problems with early 80series gearboxes.
Changing the nylon ball and the nylon gear stick seat was suggested to me. Didnt want to spend $2k on rebuild so thought it was worth trying. Changing them made no difference.
Difficult gear shifts in mine is obviously from worn synchros. If I remember to shift from one gear to the next slowly I have no problem. 80series definitely dont have sports car gearbox.
Change the oil first, 30 0r 40 bucks worth of oil is cheap way to improve driveability.

as a matter of interest , and i'm about to do my 200k service, what oil do i put in the transfer case? the same vmx-m 75/85 or something else?
oh, it is an 80 series, diesel, manual, full time

I have some minor grinding going down from 4-3 so I will try this, apart from that it is difficult to get into gears when cold.
Writing the spec and picking it up Saturday.

Toyota specify the same API GL4 or 5 SAE 75W90 oil for the gearbox and transfer case. Almost identical spec to the VMX-M. I put the VMX-M in my gearbox and transfer to save buying two almost identical spec oils. have had no dramas after 12mnths use.

I had all my synchros and some bearings replaced as all checked out, same as T-rex $1500.
Also have 1 year old HD clutch.
I can atleast select 1st gear without coming to a stop now but still feeling abit rough when cold.
Will have to try this VMX-M out.
