is being dropped into my 93 (200tdi) D1 as an easy replacement after the death of the original engine. It is being pump tweeked for a little more power and i might play a bit more as time goes on but.....my question is should i do anything (or get something done) immediately to overcome the known timing belt issue and/or soft cylinder head (obviously short of changing the head this might be a stupid qustion) before i drive it away from the garage??

I'd put a new full timing belt and pulley kit in it.

As for the head, corrosion inhibitor, new hoses, fan hub, new thermostat and a rebuilt radiator should keep it happy. Just don't ever get it hot!

A low coolant alarm and maybe a new white coolant expansion tank, the head will only be problem if you severely cook it.
