could someone please tell me how to fix a hilux handbrake!!!

Ok the situation lol.
my 1983 hilux handbrake has all of a sudden decided not to work at all.
i have tried to tighten the adjuster under the truck but it still is doing nothing. it was working fine until saturday wen i did some offroad work and im assuming i have stretched the cable as i was flexing it up abit.
everything is still in tact and the mechanism works fine.
does anyone have any suggestions or ways of fixing this problem, would appreciate any feed back possible.

I am only speculating cause I havent seen a hilux setup...
My Skyline has a drum brake especially for the handbrake (and disc for normal brakes)
So see if there is a plug on the rear drum, then an adjuster?
If the lever only pulls up a small amount, then its not the cable, if the lever is getting pulled through the roof, maybe its the cable. there could be adjustment at the rear on the cable too, where it does into a Y shape.
As I said, I'm only guessing, but it will give you something to try until expereinced people get back to you.

After owning a 60 series, surf and 100 series, Toyota only fits park brake handles because ADR requires them to be there. Far as I can tell, they don't stay useful for more than 5 minutes after you get them setup. Decorative value only.
The real answer for you however is to get the book and follow the procedure. It goes something along the lines of. Slack off adjuster cable, with screwdriver, wind out adjusters in each drum through slot in rear until they bind, then back off 8 clicks. Re-adjust cable.

Agree - and if your silly enough to get them wet and/or dirty then don't even bother adjusting them.......

Pull you're rear brakes apart and see if they are filled with mud and crap and what condition your pads are in.

Guys, I have seen many handbrakes not work due to incorrect procedure on adjusting them.
my lux hand brake, and my mates 83 lux both work well.
Trick is this.
loosen off your handbrake adjuster cable where the cab cable meets the diff cable on that lever arm.
Make sure that the rear brakes are in good condition, and that the adjusters work correctly.
with cable loose, adjust up the rear brakes till they just start to drag.
pull on the hand brake cable to seat the shoes, and readjust till you get a very slight drag.
Repeat for other side.
Adjust up the cable that you previously loosend untill you get the required distance of pull in the cab.
Once adjusted, check the rear brakes for drag, it should be the same as before.
one handbrake that works.
Reasons for poor handbrake operation.
A: Stuffed rear brakes
B: out of adjustment rear brakes
C: incorrectly adjusted rear brakes and cable (Ie winding up the handbrake adjuster cable before adjusting the rear shoes, which gives a spongey pedal and crap handbrake performance)
D: Incorrectly adjusted cable, or siezed/ bent diff cable and assy.

Steep hills might pay to wack it in low. Done this for a while when mine was daily driven now it actulay works only because they might check it when at a comp other wise it'll still be getting parked in gear. Trains procedure is on the money also if you do mud driving pull the drums off and wash it out as it'll act like cutting compound on the shoes and in no time it'll need adjusting then after a while longer it'll need shoes and drums machining

I had a similar problem with a new set of handbrake shoes, after adjusting the brakes several times the pedal brake would work fine but the hand brake would only work for a day or so, I was stumped. Checking and rechecking I found that the cut out for the hand brake leaver on the shoes were too deep hence the shoes were faulty, so I fitted a nother set of new Bendex shoes no probs after that.

Fit a drive shaft brake, that will fix it. My handbrake only ever stays adjusted for about two days before basically becoming in effective.

Mate get it all the time its just mud and grit in them like Sic Lux said its acts like sandpaper and chews though your pads
jack one side up take the wheel and drum off clean them out you may have to rub your hand over the pad and inside of the drum to get the crap off them then put the drum and wheel back on and adjust the brakes up with the little cog down the bottom pop off the bottom rubber plug (if you've got one) and you can get a flat blade screwdriver in there and adjust them until they drag on the drum if you go too far and its hard to spin the wheel you can use another screwdriver and push the self adjusting tab on the cog out of the way and run the cog backwards to adjust them off(make sure the hand brake is not on and the adjuster in the center is all the way off)
repeat for the other side then run the nut up on the handbrake adjuster under the cab to suit where you want the handbrake to come on at
!!WARNING!! watch out don't leave this adjusted off and full of crap for a couple of trips ive done it before and i kept losing all my brakes i ran into a shorty patrol that way thank god for barwork
try it mate i'm 90% sure this is your problem

Thats the one, theres a Hi Lux one in 4WDA this month for about $229.00, a bargain in my books, and works real well off road.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, took her in the mud the other day and washed her off real good with the karcher now the bloody thing works perfectly, bloody hiluxs, they are so unpredictable, reminds me of women sometimes lol.
might have to invest on a drive shaft handbrake, would be good coz ill have 4 wheel braking when loked in to 4wd hey.

Drill a hole in trans tunnel right above your uni joint and get the biggest screw driver you got and go through the lot, too easy.

Universal across all rwd makes and models
