just looking on e-bay and saw a swb safari diesel it did not have much info on it but in one photo it looked like it had 3 shifters in it
1 transfer
2 gear box
3 ? I thought it might be an over drive like a fairly over drive my boss has in his 60 series it looks standard ish.

Just interested in what it might be any ideas  i don't want to buy just be good to know what it might be.

the third one is the PTO select.

If you want to use the winch on the Safari model you need to engage the PTO to make it work. thats what the 3rd lever is for.

Usually you select Neutral on the Transfer case lever, put the PTO into gear and select 1st or 2nd gear on the manual transmission and let the clutch out, it then winches and you can control the speed by the accelerator.

i am trying my hardest to get a PTO winch :)

Yes its a PTO lever.
But it doesent work like that. That is how they work in landies and toys + old patrols. But on a GQ it only controls forwards or rev. There is no need to have the x-fer case in N.
It is possible to winch and drive. but generally, 1st low gives to much wheel speed relative to the line speed of the winch. Need maybe 2.8:1 x-fer gears.

Nope.

Why don't you just get a complete MQ setup? I got 2 for RMP&O from here last year and sent them to the States for him...shed loads of them on TradeMe.

Yup you sure did...got one all mounted up in the P-troll, works sweet!

I don't think they are that slow. Do not know line speed but it is at least as fast as a normal electric winch. Thing is I am not doing comps so no need for a fast winch. And a PTO will pull over a house! :D

FYI, the MQ/MK uses the exact same PTO winch as the GQ. The PTO box I am not sure about but the actual winch is identical. I assume it is Nissan built but I am guessing....they are built really well imho.

There is one subtle difference between the MQ/MK winches and GQ ones. The centre shaft thru the winch from free-spool end to gearbox end is longer for MQ/MK. All this means is the spacing of the bolt pattern for bolting it to you winch bar is wider then GQ. So a MQ/MK winch wont fit into the factory GQ winch cradle, unless you mod it a bit...nothing a bit of farting around can't overcome.

The input shaft to the worm gear goes all the way thu and exits the front of the housing. Just means an extra bearing and seal to maintain. Bearings and seals are all available aftermarket...think the bearings I got for yours were for a trailer rebearing kit Ian?

Other than that, the gears and free-spool are identical. Because of the input shaft and centre shaft differences though, the drum and housing are different, plus the output of course.

None on TradeMe at the moment, but they turn up regularly.

Glad they're working out well for you Ian.

Turps mentioned above putting in transfer case gears, so you can drive and winch.

GQ Trol do you kiwi fellow's often do this ???

Looking at an auto shorty gq w/ pto at the moment...

We all do it. Can winch and drive no problems, but when you get a bit of traction, you will over-run the winch rope. 83% t-case reduction gears and winching / driving in 1st low gets you pretty well matched. Most comp guys aren't willing to compromise vehicle speeds on driving stages, so retain std t-case ratios and put up with the mis-matched winching / driving speeds.

Another option is to use an overdrive box on the driveshaft to the winch...but use at your own peril!!!

Cant use Nissan auto with a PTO driven winch. The PTO output comes off the gearbox on the Nissan. Toyotas come of t-case so you can run an auto with PTO winch.

Bummer.

So PTO must be manual... learn something new.

Plan was to thow a pto onto the auto, or an auto into an already pto'd safari. Guess I can't then...

At this stage, thats correct.

There is a Nissan auto in the Civilian / Atlas bus that is used behind a TD42-T motor and it happens to have a PTO cover plate of the same bolt pattern as the PTO winch, so it is possible to have both.

A mate has tried making it work but gave up to concentrate on a crank driven hydraulic winch.....but with a bit of effort the auto / PTO arrangement can be made to work.

I am actually really curious about a few Cabstar/Altlas things...

My 86 5spd supposedly came from a Cabstar that had a ED33T motor. The 5spd I have is exactly the same as an MK 5spd with the exception of the bellhousing and maybe the mainshaft length. Now I have seen Cabstars and Atlas with 6-12spd trannies. I have also seen them in 4wd. These Cabstars/Atlas seem to have a variety of motors but some I see running TD42's and older ones with variations of the SD33T.

So I am curious if it would be possible to find the right Cabstar/Atlas and use the truck box in a Patrol? The result might be having a crawler box because if it has 12 speeds the first 2-5 gears are going to be damn low. Also what front diff are the 4wd Cabstar/Atlas using?
