Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just cleaned the car and was driving home when my dash lit up like a christmas tree including turbo, turbo overboost, t/belt, a/temp, red battery charge light, etc.

Will have to take a look at all the fuses in the daylight but any recommendations on what it could be? Car starts and continues to run fine.

Your alternator

The plug in the back of the alt ...clean the terminals...undo the tie on the guard near the alt to give better vibration isolation...

checked plug, it appeared to look fine. All the terminals were clean.

Put the voltmeter on the terminal B on the alternator. Only the same voltage as what was at the battery terminals, it wasn't lifting the voltage at all while the engine was running.

Looks like I'm up for a new alternator. Will see if I can be bothered having this one rebuilt or just go buy a new one. I hear the factory ones are pretty dear though and the after market ones aren't as good.

Brushes or regulator then...dont pay an auto sparky 250 for silver reconditioning paint...buy a new reg with brushes aftermarket and install it yourself...or get someone to do it for you...it is inside the back cober plate and only half a dozen phillips screws.

I have a 1hz in an 80 that the dash lights come on and off just after start up by the time I'm out of the street they stay off. Only happens when the engine is cold

Got a second hand one for $270 and it fired up without a problem. Now I have the chance to take my time and pull the old one apart and rebuild so I have a spare. Sounds like this is a common problem.

Perfect timing too as the starting battery didn't have enough charge left to start the car when I was about to leave the shop. Lucky the second battery is the same size and I was able to flick over and start off the second one.

my dash lights would flicker when the motor sat on about 2300-2400rpm. it was really annoying when cruising at 90kph. I got some inox (like wd40) and cleaned the plug, as well has sprayed it right into the alternator. It stopped doing it until just recently

So i sprayed more inox into the alternator and for now it's working fine.

I'll probably keep on doing this until it finally shits itself.

Had the same problem in mine. Talked to a Toyota mechanic and he said the harness going into the back of the alternator was too short from factory. The harness should be clipped about 100mm from the back of the alternator, just remove it from that clip and that should fix it. Gotta love a quick fix.

the plug on the alternator gets loose connectors, you can get replacement connectors and solder onto your exsisting wires.
much cheaper to try first then replacing your alternator
