G'day

im looking at buying some new rubber in the near future, im looking at fairly large tyres around the 37- 38in dia, currentl;y run 35's at's and 33in claws but want larger tyres for purely offroad weekend abuse, although i wish to drive to the trails on my big rubber.


What are bias tires like on the road? besides being illegal. im looking at the maxxis creepy krawlers or some bias claw 38x13x15

I run the Simex JT2 and its nothing flash on the road, but they're fine and wont spin out on every wet corner like you may thing. The only think really that pisses me about them, and probably every other bias is that they flat spot from being parked and may take a few minutes to heat up and go round again. I've toured all over Cape York with them, driven interstate etc with no probs.

BTW, Bias doesn't mean illegal.

Find my pedes washy on road and avoided driving on them as much as possible and have had one wet corner experince so i wouldn't trust them not because there a bias ply just the rubber compound. Also i wouln't expect to many road K's out of them

Go get yourself a set of 37 Maxxis Trepadores. You'll have to go 17" wheels.........but it's worth it. These tyres handle the road better than some radials, without excessive noise.

i have maxxis kreepy krawly's and the are not too bad on the road,of course the radials are better but sometimes i just get too lazy to swap wheels.

I run bias claws on the road all the time - they drive better than my old Simex JT's but not great in the wet, and squirm around a bit under brakes especially.

Just drive cautiously and you'll be fine.

awesome thanks for all your replys, ive been told by almost every tyre shop that they are illegal for road use although im not too worried, they may of been refering to beadlocks (external) although i cant see any reason for them to be.

i have run bias claws, jt2's and et2's and i found the 36x12.5.15 the best of the lot on the road still slippery in the wet but the extra lug in the center made a difference i thought. and also the et2's in that size are bigger then some 37's on the market.

Chances are it won't be legal to run bias plys on road. IIRC claws are the only bias tyres approved by the DOT (USA), but that doesn't necessarily make them legal on australian roads. As far as i know, it really depends what is stated on your particular vehicals tyre placard.

It may or may not be illegal to run bias tyres on your car, so long as the speed and load rating are appropriate (which they're probably not, but that's not because they're bias) for example, gen 1 hiluxes with split rims and sierra traybacks up until 1987 ran bias tyres from the factory.

All super swampers (Bias, hybrid and radial) bear a DOT E4 rating, meaning they're legal for road use in the USA. However, DOT ratings are not recognised in Australia, which is why swampers are not legal on the road in australia. Same is true for Claws. Maxxis have an aussie spec speed and load rating, ( I was surprised to see this) but depending on the car, it will be too low to be legal anyway, so it's irrelevant.

Thanks, i stand corrected.

Nonetheless, how many bias tyres are speed rated at all? (not a rhetorical question).
Also chances are a 37-38" tyre won't be legal on Twistinchassie's car anyway, so the construction should be the least of Mr. Plods concerns.

im almost positive 33 let alone 37 or 38's are going to be illegal to run on my 1st gen 4runner, due to the tyre size they came out std with. Can any one verify a possible loop hole ive heard of and seen in action where mates of mine have torn of their std tyre placard and replaced it with one stating the larger rims/ tyre size, even to the point ive seen white lables on the inside of the door with the larger size of rim/ tyre combo on it done by a tyre shop on a friends bagged rodeo with 20's. he was pulled over and the Cookie didnt question the lable, rims were however engineered.

as im only running these tyres offroad and from the short(usally) trip from my house to the tracks, im not all too concerend would just like to have all my mods covered so i can tell the fun police to stop harrassing me.
