1998 Landcruiser 75 series

I am new to the 4x4 scene and just bought a full stock Landcrusier 75 series. The car has been serviced frequently and only really done road work apart from the odd day on the property.

Is this a possible 4x4 rig if mod'd properly? What can I do to make it more 4x4 capable?

I do not understand how to do say a 4 inch lift with things such as; what parts I need?

Any light on these topics would be well appreciated.
Cheers

there are heaps of things you can do to a 75 series, just comes down to how much you want to spend and what you are looking to do with the vehicle

Basically to make your rig more better offroad is to get abit of lift under it

get a set of 2" raised leaf springs and a good set of shocks for it

from there look at a set of offroad tyres, winch, lockers etc

Probably the only real downpart of the 75 series is that the springs are under the diffs which can be a pain as you can get hung up either in mud or rocks etc but there are ways around that..

What do you want to do with it? Mudracing, rockcrawling touring????
Basicaly when you go 4bying the basics are traction{ lockers and tyres }.
On road you want a bit of comfort and power {suspension and turbo}
Until you decide what you want to do, its not so easy to give accurate advice.

we hav a 75' ute. its got a 4 inch spring lift, 2 inch body lift, front n rear air lockers. and we hav also cut the tray.

and we have had it in all kinds of places the only down side we hav noticed is there really light in the back because its a tray back. so if that is the issue we found if you put a peice of railway line or a heavy metal it will defently prevent the problem

I will mainly use the car for 4wd'ing although would you class weight in the back being enough supplies for the weekend? maybe even a boat ?

Do you recall any brands or anything? and what had to be done allow the modifications to the front and rear?

Help is really good, Very much appreciated..

As far as it being light in the rear end, take some leaves out. I took 4 out, never look back. steel tray helps.

Looking into Having a;
4 inch spring lift, 2 inch body lift, cutting the rear tray shorter (any custom tray designs people have done?), Installing roll bars, Air lockers(of some kind) and having Lightforce lights bolted onto top of the roll bar on the tray.

Will Any of this involve a few problems? or is it All able to be done without too much hassle?

Can some body tell me What a 1HZ motor is and what I can do in terms of getting more power? It is a V6 deisel with 4164cc.

hey- a 1hz is an inline 6cyl diesel engine

2 valves per cyclinder with indirect injection(it has combustion chambers)

they are good old school engines and are easy to get more power out of. I deal a lot with them at work(part time diesel fitter inbetween uni).

the obious choice would be a turbo kit- there are HEAPS of write ups on turbo installs on outerlimits. If you really want more power than that you could try

-bigger exhaust (mandrel=more money)
-intercooling- either air-air or air-water(there are write up in 4wd monthly on this in issue 90 something)
-boost compensating (aneroid ???)
-lpg injection

however if you go the turbo route make sure you get it set up properly and get some dyno runs done- casue abnormally high temps kill a 1hz pretty quickly(we are forever replacing cracked heads at work----silly drivers :x )

hey i got a 92 hzj75 tray i have 2 inch suspension lift 2 inch body lift, extended brake lines, i run 16x10 offset rims so i do not get any rubbing with 35 inch tyres, front diff relocated 25mm forward, removed my swaybar, i also have turboed my 1hz and have arb airlockers

i would not go any higher in suspension as i have no troubles with rubbing and i don't like the idea of lifting too high as it increases your chances of rolling. others will disagree thats just my 5cents worth

With the turbos? Is there a type/Brand that most people use and have the least amount of problems with. Would like a fairly large increase in pwoer for minimal cost (If that has ever been possible)?

Also Would i need to change much to set the engine up with a turbo?

theres is the common brands- garret, switcher?,denco etc

also with a turbo set up youll need to fiddle with the fuel pump, also its reccommened you get an EGT(exhaust temp guage) fitted, this lets you know how hot things are getting, cuase too hot = money to fix cracked head and so on. A good bigger exhasut should help with that though. i reccomend you talk to a shop that does turbo fit outs just to get all the info and make sure you get it tuned properly

i got a turbo kit from 4wd systems (switcher turbo) in south australia and put it on myself you only need to get your diesel pump tuned up to suit and i would recommend a 3in exhaust, you won't believe the difference it makes your landcruiser driveable

Have been looking into tyres also.. how much chance have I got of fitting 35's with a 2 or 3 inch spring lift and a 2 inch body lift? What am i going to have to do?

Also, Has anybody ever changed the seats in a landcruiser???... Instead of having the stock three seat I was thinking of getting 2 more comfortable "race seats", Can it be done without much hassle?

fit 35's easy with 2 or 3inch lift 2 inch body lift you'll have to move your diff forward 25mm by redrilling your perches and fish plates. i but two "race seats" in mine just got brackets with seats to suit had to drill the passanger rear hole but there was a nut there. pretty easy
