I am looking at fitting a new 1kd 3l turbo intocooled hilux motor and gearbox into a 91 model hilux. Has any one done this before. The 1kd block looks the same as a 1kz block but not totaly certian. Also worried wo much hassel the computer and wireing will be.
These are the issues that i can see so far.
Engine mounts are in a different location, gearbox crossmember is in a different location, i will need to put a 2 inch body lift to fit the intercooler under the bonnet. I need the peddle box for the drive by wire throttle and i can use a 1kz radiator that will fit between my chassis rails. Not to sure how the sump will go but that can be changed ok. also need an inlet cross over pipe to go from turbo to the air box on the passenger side. The engine wireing seems to be mostly seperate from the body loom so that should be ok with just a bit of rewiring and grafting the nessary wires into the existing loom.
I am hopeing some one else has done this before so i dont have to work it all out my self. thanks.

If you are talking about a 1kdftv engine, as far as I know you will need a complete half cut to make this work. We have had a vehicle in that had this done and the owner fitted the dash as well including the ign system as it was all coded to the ecu. It was a big job.

Your best bet is a halfcut. Everything you need is there.

A few months ago I put a 1kz into my lj70. If you have the time, 2 weeks and all is done.

1kd will be expensive and theres some costly repairs on injectors and fuel pump.

If I were you, go for a 1kz-te and fit an intercooler. Again, halfcut.

I'm with mates that recomend 1KZ-T .. more than 1KD-FTV the ECU factor it's important here.

And damn ! variavle vanes turbo and plenty more electronical stuff will put you in the electronic world fast .. more than you want maybe.

Not imposible, but centanly not easy.

It is from a 2005 3l 4d4 hilux. How much trouble is it to fit the dash? they seem very different? Did all new engine mount need to be made and where what was done with the air filter?
What was the car like when finished? worth the hassel? It wont be a frount cut but i have axcess to almost all of the gear, i just need to know what to pull off. I should be able to get it for under $5k
Doesnt the 1kz-te have a computer anyway, this is the local hilux motor? so my thought is that the 1kd souldnt be much different in that respect???
I can do engine swaps and wireing as i am currently fitting a supercharged efi ford V6 to a mk2 Escort  so i have had a bit of experance with this sort of thing but if its half as much work as that i will not be going there again

the ecu on the 1KZ motor is nowhere near as complex as the 1KD- It controls fueling on a mechanical injection system- not the complete injection cycle like the 1KD does.
