80 steering - intermediate shaft length/pics

Hey guys,

just wondering if anyone with an 80 is able to take pics/measurements of the intermediate steering shaft.

i am led to believe it has a rag joint at one end.. i have read that it might be suitable for use when converting the 40 to 60# power steering instead of replacing the steering shaft with one from a 55 (rare as hensteeth). you can use the 80 intermediate which has a rag joint to connect to the 40 steering shaft.

any info/tips/measurements would be appreciated!!

i was always led to believe 80 series didnt run a rag jount, instead the use a small uni set up

what are you actually trying to do?

just keep the 40 column, run a bush or bearing on the firewall exit, run a bundera shaft to the box, and make a bolt plate with 4 holes in it to bolt the 40 column to the bundera shaft

Hey Twisty,

I checked today, and I reckon a j8 intermediate shaft from the power steering box to the original j4 column at the firewall may work. The j8s use the same rag joint at the firewall as a j4. The length of the intermediate shaft would depend on where you need to locate the steering box, but then the shaft length can be modified and certified if needed.

(Just more food for thought).

Bj, trying keep original 40 column, to run to a 60 box.. thats all..

55# Steering Column
75# Steering shaft with Uni's
80# Cushion Joint

Maybe the rag joint is the 80 cushion joint?
