I had the tyres of the rear of my hilux off and found that my rear drums have a wobble in them on both sides. I've had a talk to a local lad and he said that axles are very hard to twist or bend. I'm just trying to narrow down the suspects.

Take the drums off and spin the axle looking at the surface wg=here the drum sits on if there is any run out there it's most likely bent. does it shudder throught the ute when brakes are applied. i very stongy doubt it's bent as i've jumped mine a few times with fliped rims on it and there still good.

No, there is no shudder when braking and no wobble when i drive. Its got 33's though which probably take up a lot of it.

i was once told, that drums can get hot and warp a little under extreme heavy braking. eg towing down long steep hils.
You might just need to replace your drums, shoes etc.

i'd say then t's just the drum moving on the axle when the wheel is off i wouldn't worry about it. you only need to machine/replace drum's when the shudded when braking.

yeh ive jumped the f*k outa the old one and mine never bent on me either

Ive bent and broken heaps. Its not jumping that bends them. Its sliding sideways while spinning and then hitting something hard that does this.

I broke 2 rear axles and one inner front axle within about 10 seconds on one obsticle.

When you say wobble what do you actually mean?

when rotating the drum, looking at them from the rear of the truck, you can see the drum wobble in and out, similar to what you see on semi trailer dual rims that havent been fitted properly, the drum doesnt stay vertical (at 90 degrees to the axle) its also started making a scratching noise from the right rear wheel, but only when driving straight or turning left when the weight is on that side, can hardly hear it when decelerating or braking, its got me stumped.

Wheel bearing and/or bent backing plate.

Was the drum clamped to the axle with wheel nuts or retaining screws or just sitting on the axle?

They were bolted on with the wheel nuts

You need to check the run-out on the axles with a dial gauge.

i just had the truck jacked up and rotated them with the rims and tyres on and couldn't see any "wobble". But i'll have to replace the bearings as the wheels didn't spin freely very easily.

could be that the shoes are draging on the drum causing restance this can also point to wheel bearing needs replace. does it get tight then easy to turn then tight again and so on or just tight all the time

Just went through all this, If you don't have access to a dial gauge here is what you can do.
Chok both front wheels so you can't move forwards or back.
Take out or gear and release handbrake.
Jack up rear wheel on the side you suspect is bent,
get a broomstick or something simular,
rest one end against the guard/flare and then push the other end towards the tyre till it just touches.
Then watch for run out as you rotate the tyre.

This can be done with just the drum on as well just make sure it is tigtened with wheelnuts and can be done with just the wheel flange.

It is a crewd dial gauge but works.

Also when braking lightly if the pedal moves in and out slightly under your foot is a good sign of something bent or drum warped.

If it has been happeng for a while, look at the shoes for uneven ware form one side of the shoe to the other.

Mine was running out only approx 1mm at the flange but equated to approx 12mm at edge of tyre.

The wheel flange was bent not the actual axle but it is all one peice.

It makes an awful scratching noise at one point of the rotation on the right hand rear side only. It wasn't making a racket until i gave it to the mechanics who replaced the gearbox for me.
