Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Getting to time to fork out for a winch. I intend to run plasma and the Premier is the only one I know of with the external brake apart from the High Mount Warn.

a) Does anyone know any other wich without the brake in the drum?

b) Can anyone recommend a supplier for these that would do a decent deal?

plenty of people run plasma on low mounts without dramas.

The only time a low mount winch drum will heat up to a temp that could cause you problems is in the situation of winching yourself back down a hill as the brake system inside the drum will heat up due to the load and trying to hold the weight of the vehicle. In normal use e.g: winching up a hill or out of a hole the temp will not affect the drum or the rope at all.

If you want to save yourself some money buy a "tabor" low mount i have 2x mates with them and they have retrofitted 6hp motors to them (straight bolt up) and they fly now. If you know someone in the trade you will pay approx $880 for a "tabor" and then spend $500 on a 6hp so for $1380 you have an awesonme lowmount with more speed.

Letting down is what concerns me.
Situation a few weeks back with a mate. Steep and loose, locked, slid sideways until couldn't go forward, and rear bumper was near tree. Had to winch uphill to get back straight but nw on very loose and nasty rocks, so have to "lower" back to point where traction was reasonable. So I can see lowering being used. Probably 2-3 car lengths (10-15m).
Also on really slippery descents would be safer than the "brakes off and go for it" approach.

A winch isn't designed to be a hoist, powering out should be kept to a minimum. Just get a Tabor as already mentioned and throw some rope on it.

If you wait long enough you'll come across a Warn high mount at a good price.
I bought a 2nd hand one for $1100 a couple years back and never had a problem.
