hey all i got a 93 mod single cab with a/c p/s lpg and a farked 2.4l petrol motor we pulled the head off because it was overheated and oil was looking like a caramel milk shake and not running so for $450.00 with rego i thought it was a good buy after getting the head off theres no milky shit on the pistons and apears to have gone in through where the timing chain is at the front of the motor the radiator was pulled out to find that it was still half full of green radiator fluid so i think i mite be lucky anyhow the guy i brought it off said that it has to be started on petrol and it has a 3 way switch up-gas mid-neutral down-petrol no sure how it works any ideas cheers adam...

It will depend on how well the Gas is tuned. If its tuned well they will start first time every time on Gas. It also depends if its ever been run on fuel as if the carby is kept dry for too long it wont run on fuel at all as all the pumps and seals will have dried out and perished. It will just be a bit of trial and error.
It is best if you at least drive it for 10 min a week on fuel. This will keep the seals in the carb and fuel pump in good condition and will also lubricate the valves. It would be a good idea to get the head checked out while you have it off. They are prone to cracking and also are bad for suffering from valve seat recessing when run on LPG.

there is a plate on the firewall thats says the gas was fitted in 1993 so
im guessing that it was fitted new it has done 453 thou kays but the bores have no lip at the top and no movement in the pistons a good idea to get the head checked out while its off just to be sure thanks RUFF

With that many Ks it will more than likely need a Timming Chain, tensioner and Guides. Possibly a timming gear set as well. It is also common for the timming case to corrode through its water jacket behind the water pump.

mechanics looking at it either tue or wed i guessed that it needed a new tensioner and guides as the fell apart when getting cam out the timing chain has left marks on timing cover from that aswell

If the Guides had let go then the timing chain can also rub right through the case into the water galleries. If you can find a kit with metal guides buy it rather than a kit with plastic guides as the metal ones dont fail.
