Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Need a cooler on my power steering. Using hyrualic ram assist steering and getting a little hot...

Anyone done this? Just thinking of wandering into Repco or similar and picking up a small/medium tranny cooler (like a mini-radiator). Repco sell em for $100 for a small one and $120 for a medium jobbie.

Then just throwing it in front of my radiator, hooking the return line (going from the box to the pump) up to the cooler and hey presto...

Any tips or cautionary tails of woe??

I think the ram assist stering would have a lot more pressure than a trans

so some mods may have to be done to the cooler or a custom one made

tranny cooler will be fine to use a power steering cooler. you could always get one from the wreckers most commodores from vt onwards had decent tranny coolers bigger ones on the one with tow packs

The cooler would go on the low pressure (return) line, not the high pressure side.

Thinking of getting a brand new unit as I don't want to flush crap through my system and damage the pump or ram.

Will work fone, being use a small auto cooler for years.

That's a good idea. Get a new one and never worry about it again.

i got mine from ausie auto tend for $87 and it was the same unit that they sell at Repco

I also run hydro assist and I use a cooler from repco that cost under $100 and I think it was a "4x4" one?? Anyway it comes with hoses, clamps and the mounts. I think that one like this is the best way to go - nice and easy

While I was at it I also added a filter. This was mainly to get the fluid quantity up to reduce heat but I also had concerns about any swarf left in the box after drilling and tapping the fittings.

I ended up with a bigger resiviour as well but not at first. My power steer system now holds about 5L of fluid and never looks like getting hot
