Outer Limits 4x4 Board

first off im sorry if this has been already covered but i did search and did not find exactly what i needed. i have a sj80 and have been lookin at gears for some time, i had a mate just recently give me a transfer out of an sj 50 (i think it was the 2 stroke) he said this would help me out but i thought i would ask.

1. would this be a reduction (and is it worth it)
2. will it bolt up the same

any feedback would be muchly appreciated cheers

LJ50 is a 2 stroke
SJ50 is a narrow track 1.3L Sierra.

LJ80 is an 800cc first of the 4 strokes (looks a bit like a 2 stroke Suzuki)
SJ80 is a coil sprung Sierra

I'm just a tad confused whos got what as you said your mates is a SJ50 2 stroke...

I pretty sure LJ50 and LJ80 transfers are identical, and interchangable with no difference whatsoever.

SJ50 and SJ80 transfers are not the same. They can be swapped however, try to search for coily transfer swaps etc. SJ50 - SJ70 are slightly lower ratio then the SJ80, but the best bit is the SJ50-70 cases have aftermarket gears available.

LJ and SJ transfers being swapped would be quite an undertaking. It would be foolish to put an LJ transfer in an SJ, however modding an LJ to take a SJ transfer could prove usefull as it gives options for aftermaket gears.

oh yea sorry it is the lj50 transfer out of the two stroke and mine is a 95 model 1300

They're sooooo totally different you'd have a major hassle putting one in.

They are designed for centred diffs front and rear
The flanges are tiny and have a funny rectangular pattern.
They hold very little oil and most of the drive parts are much smaller
There's no aftermaket gears for them, no twin sticks, disconnects, or any other "hard core" parts

The mounts are really different as is every other dimesion.

They'll all be very old and in need of a rebuild, but yes the gearing is quite low (about 3.5:1 low range) but nowhere near as low as ANY aftermarket sierra gearset.

For my money, put a shift light 1.0 case in your car, this will lower your high range 12% and low range 26%. This has been covered on here many times. If this isn't enough then just choose your aftermarket gearset to suit.
