Disco Stereo install - Speaker options ?

Post by Evan »

Well since i just picked up my LR disco (97/98 series 1) and its only an S model i am in need of some decent tunes.
Not after a hardcore huge system just something that sounds good.

Real issue i see is the tiny (4.5 or 5.5") speakers in the front doors, not to mention the small rear units.

What have people done ?

6.5" speaker somewhere ? (custom door pods ?)

Or keep the small ones (even they need upgradeing !) and use a subwoofer for some extra punch ?

Headunit, i plan on putting in a blaupunkt unit, are the LR connectors by any chance the same as BMW ??? would be a straight swap in if it is i think.

Some ideas would be great.

BTW not worried about brands as i have already decided to use all blaupunkt (cause it is cheaper for me , and i like it)

5 1/2" splits in the doors, tweeters pointing at occupants (they are very dependent on direction)
10" single sub in 1' cube.
needs a good quality 3 or 4 channel amp.
because the front stage speakers are small they will have to be very good quality.
you could use 6 1/2 " spits in the doors with a little build-out. that would be the best set-up.
subs just aren't for doof-doof heads, they take the bass stress of the smaller speakers giving greater clarity and deeper bass at the same time.
without the head unit, this system could be bought from jaycar for around $500.(amps, splits, sub+box, cable)
they used to have build-outs for the doors as well.
good-luck!!

5 1/2" in the doors, is that using stock location ? They must be a nice thin speaker as well

Not using build outs makes the install a bit more simple. And Sub box is easy to handle so may just stick to the stock sizes and locations.
