Hi Guys

Ok here is the story

Got a lwb Vitara Auto g16b efi, had a blown head with crack so new one installed also rad was sent off for a clean 20% blocked

Took it down to Preston Beach on yesterday and on a 27deg day sand was not to soft and running 235/75/15 tyres the temp gauge got to half then just keep slowly climbing to just off the red,I put the heater on for a bit and that helped bring it down a little it got a new thermostat also

I just not sure whats going on it did not boil so thats good and no loss of coolant

Im not sure if this is normal for people with same model when first started in the morning cold after driving off for say 2-5 mins the gauge goes up from cold to half then back down and settles just about cold its fine after that no overheating probs in town just seems slow 4wding it gets hot

Shroud is on radiator also is there anyway to test the clutch fan ?

any ideas

Ben

I would definately be checking the fan and hub, does that model have a viscous hub? If it does just go ahead and replace it, there is no real way of testing them. Also, check to make sure the system is fully bled of all air, there may be an air pocket in the system somewhere.

Hi Sandgroper,
You may want to take it to an exhaust centre and have them check the Catalytic Converter. I went through the same… Possible cracked head, overheating etc…
It ended up being my Cat was 60% blocked with carbon deposits, all those hot exhaust gases not escaping actually caused a crack in the block.
Just a thought, may cost a little to have it checked out, but then again it could cost more if it is blocked.

Do you have shade cloth or flyscreen covering your front grille (to keep the bugs out?). I did this many years ago when I went on a trip to Waroora Station for 2 weeks of camping and fishing. The screen was ok when travelling at speed (highway or on road), but when 4wheeling on sand the slower speeds didn't allow enough air through the screen to the radiator which caused the engine temp to rise close to the red.

Hi SG71,

Did a search on the web for checking your cat convertor. It still may not be your problem with the engine temperature rising towards the red, but answers the question of how to check that its in good nick.

Just an update got the zoorst system replaced anyways as I had a few small holes in the muffler turns out the the stock zoorst manifold was cracked anyways so got headers and whole rear replaced for $470 and sounds the goods too I had to get a new oxygen sensor as the old one was stuffed trying to remove it repco was $41 for one :)

I hope to test it out this week to see if it makes any differance

Nic the temp gauge got to just before red zone then I turned the heater on to try and drop it mind you it was on the beach and about 27 deg and been going for about 15kms before it hit nearly hit red zone

No loss of coolent and next I will change the fan see if that helps
