lost some boost TD42T

had my GU ute out at cruiser park over the last 5 days and have given it the best (and also roughest) drive since i have had it. on the way home though i noticed i had lost 3lbs boost.

i havent touched the motor since i bought it but installed an autometer boost gauge which gave me a reading of 14psi under heavy load. now its flatout trying to get 12.

i noticed a small loss in power (especially when boost comes on, of course) so i'm sure it cant be a gauge problem. could the boost controller (i think thats what it is) have adjusted with the rough driving? i cant seem to see any leaks anywhere either.

any other thoughts????

thanks

PAUL

is it dusty out there? if so check air filter first.

was going to give it a clean tomorro anyway....but stupidly didnt think of that...

UNBELEIVABLY dusty, some tracks were 6in deep with bulldust.

thanks

what year is it as the later models have an overboost cut out in them which prevents from going over 12 psi

Why is there no pics, discussion regarding Landcruiser Park Mud Bulls? Have I missed a completely different forum for posting information on this event because otherwise I would assume no one was interested in that event? Confused...

can fuel filters be "checked" or just replaced?

cleaned the air filter this morning and managed to bounce off 13psi boost giving it hard. but i dont get the spooling that i used to. it just doesnt accelerate as quickly. im still looking to find an extra 1psi or so as well. fuel filter will be the next thing to do.

do wastegates sh*t themselves?

while the engine is cold, should you be able to slide the wastegate actuator by hand?

with great difficulty yes , there should be quite a bit of preassure hot or cold

hmmm...

still at a loss to work out the problem then.... :?:

take it to someone and get checked out, and dynoed... if something is about to go poo, you would wanna find out early rather than $$$

the little fine filter on/ in the injector pump this may be blocked and restricting fuel

its always in the last place you look dude

what air filter? maybe replace the filter?? when mine lost all boost it turned out there was a crack in the air box which let some mud and crap in and totally cloged the filter up, I cleaned it right out which helped but it wasnt right until I replaced the filter....factory paper set up

i'm sure its not an air problem anymore. have a k&n air filter (oily) and yes it was clogged...but cleaned it several times. even went for a short drive without air filter element and no difference. will prob end up going back to paper filters as oil ones turn dust into mud.

im able to get what my gauge reads as 13psi now...but still not getting the kick in the ass that is spooling. it doesnt feel like it "comes on boost" like it did.

bogged is right...ill do a couple more "at home" tests and order a 3in dump pipe, fit that up along with pyro and send it in for a tune....

check that little filter or have someone check it for you
it is easily overlooked and requires a clean out every now and then

unlikely but possible.
some of the 4.2 turbo diesels have a blow off valve as well as the wastegate (not sure about the 3.0's)
go to a plumbing supply store and get a 1" BSP copper plug (male thread) unscrew the blow off valve and put in the plug. The spring weakens over time and lets boost out earlier and earlier. some crud could have got caught in it. if this isn't the cause it's worth doing anyway.

and where would this "blow off valve" be?

checked ur hoses and clamps?
If u've given it a hard time u may have loosened a clamp somewhere and it cld be letting air out under boost.

yeh no leaks. just updated the hose clamps with those heavy duty ones that use a bolt instead to make sure. but all is sealing fine.

cheers

It sounds like a boost leak. I had the same thing when i had a turbo subaru. it didnt seem to come on boost as hard. Kinda felt really doey or like it had really bad turbo lag. I had a boost leak on one of the intercooler manifold's. The reason it doesnt seem to pull like it used to even though you have only lost 1psi is due to a lack of volume.

mine isnt intercooled yet...so there are only a few places it couold leak from...and im sure it doesnt....can be a little hard to tell i imagine tho....while its free revving its not making boost/volume.

just put a new fuel filter on. it had about 6-8mm of sludge in the bottom of the old filter. but unfortunately made no difference.

ordered a 3in dump pipe today and when it is installed will get the chance to have a squiz at the wastegate. then it will be off for tune. ill notify them of the problem and hopefully resolve it

while it is there ask them to check the other fuel filter under the banjo bolt on the injector pump
