4Jb1T Oil Filter

O/K... some idiot designed a truck (Rodeo) that has the oil filter on a half arse angle directly above the front drive shaft and next to the exhaust.
Over the years I have tried all sorts of creative ways to change the filter without oil going every where.... I conceed defeat. How do you smarter folks out there do it??

Warn it up, turn it off, let it sit about 15 mins.
Drain oil from sump.
Move pan from under sump drain to under filter.
Unscrew useing a supercheap filter tool and a loooong 3/8 extension and ratchet. Swear loudly trying to get arm past aircon hoses and get a firm grip on filter. Bark knuckles on aircon hoses as you pull the filter out, swear even louder when you drop the filter.
Allow 10mins for the majority of oil to drip off the undercarriage.
Slop oil over the edge of the pan as you slide it out from under the car
. Crawl under and clean up the drips and spills, gee doesnt the front diff now look shiney and new?.
Leave a trail of oil from the car to the waste oil drum, repeat cleanup.....
MMM not the smartest method eh.

The 4JX1 Jack is the same. What were they thinking???
I pull the box that the filter come in apart and shape it to fit under the filter. Loosen the filter then slide the cardboard in. Unscrew the filter until the oil runs out (into the drain tin). The oil is directed by the cardboard. Once drained enough, remove the filter fully then the cardboard and wipe up any drips. Works 95% of the time.
This is the only way I have found to do it.

Although I have only done 2000Kms in my Jack.
Also spilt oil EVERYWHERE!
I think the only good solution would be to fit an oil filter relocation kit. Im not sure if anyone makes one to suit, but Im sure something could be adapted. It would also let you fit an oil cooler too.
Not sure if the engine needs it? Anyone know what temp the oil should be and what it runs at?

I have often thought of the concept of relocating the filter but, not being a mechaninc have no idea the ramifications on the delivery of oil. No idea of the temperature requirements but I sure as hell have to find a better solution for the oil filter.

I just put a few rags on top of the front diff and loosen it and let it drip for a few minutes. Then I take it off and replace it.
Give it a degrease and a hose off. If you have a look at an earlier rodeo its got it mounted up the other way

Moving the oil filter shouldnt be a problem. If you only use a relocation kit, the amount of oil in the sump will be slightly bigger.
It may put a small amount of presure on the oil pump but I very much doubt it would be a problem.
Id like to find someone that made a kit for it, with braded lines etc.

Use a strap type filter tool and long extension on ratchet, just crack filter and let it drain for a while. When it stops dripping, gently tilt and lower past front drive shaft and spill hot oil down you arm. Wipe the little bit of oil off front diff and half hour cleaning youself.

Use the filter housing off a 4jg2 the 3.1 motor it relocates it so that it points down and back at a 45% angle. With a small mod to the cooler pipes it bolts straight on
