GQ front end vibration

Got a nasty vibration from the front end in my LWB GQ. May or may not have something to do with pulling air on Tuesday, but I did on Tuesday at some point that's for sure. Don't know when exactly as I wasn't doing high enough speeds to notice it til I got back on the highway.

Starts getting noticeable at about 60 kph, steering wheel starts vibrating. Gets quite violent at about 80 and I get a tapping noise that sound like running over the cat's eyes on the road at around 95-100. Tapping is worse when turning right.

Initially thought I'd thrown a wheel weight, checked the balance and sure enough I'd lost one, but it didn't make much of a difference. Did a wheel alignment and it was a fair whack out, but still didn't fix the problem. Certainly helped a bit, I got the tapping noise at 80 before I did it.

What should I check next? Tie rod ends seem ok, nothing is obviously bent. Buggered a CV? Bent an axle? Bent the diff housing?

Suspension is stock with adjustable front panhard and 2" spring lift. 32" BFG muddies.

spin the wheels up on a tyre checker and see if the rim is buckled. i buckled my front right wheel doing that and hence it is now a rear wheel :P

I agree with Munga. Based on your symptoms you MAY have the same problem that I had recently. With mine the wobble became so violent it was hard to hold onto the steering wheel. 60 bucks worth of Panhard Rod bushes and an hours work fixed it. Been OK now for 3 months.

Check your Panhard Rod bushes and let us know the results.

Wheels and tyres are ok. I'll throw a set of bushes at the panhard rod this week and see what happens. They don't look the best but they certainly aren't completely stuffed.

Does anyone know the procedure for wheel alignments? The drag link isn't adjustable so I just lined the passenger wheel up with the steering wheel then adjusted the driver's wheel with the tie rod. So I moved the steering wheel off centre, will the steering dampener effect this? It's just the factory type, not return to centre.

Have somebody gently turn the steering wheel left and right whilst you look at all bushes and joints under front end. Best way to find excessive play in panhard rod bushes, draglink balljoints, tierod ends, etc.

How old are the BFG's?
I have had a simalar prob on a 75 series cruiser.
It was faulty tyres & he got 2 brand newys under waranty & that fixed all vibrations.
