How to drop the sub-tank?

Need advice quick, 2001 4.2lt turbo diesel 2001 Lancruiser.

I am a novice, Sub-tank and main tank fuel guage is faulty, on warranty toyota have taken over 2years and replaced sender unit, guage indash, thingamajig behind changeover button, resoldered wire joins to fix any faulty resistance (no joke) and it is still not fixed!

Typically the guage reads quater down on what ever is in the tank in the sub, and about an eighth in the main. It then ranges between these two readings. Sometimes the needle gets stuck when pressing the button but not often.

For the first time this week it started to read half a tank out only in the sub. I got caught out though as this time it read half a tank higher than was in the tank. It was on empty. Fuel filter clogged up and I have replaced it but am now keen to drop the sub tank as I have heard that water in the tank can give a false reading????

I have accessed a ???? I don't know what on the top of the sub tank by lifting up the carpet in the back of the cruiser revealing a plate fixed by 2 screws. It has wiring conected to what????? Is this the sender unit and how do you tell if it has been replaced if at all.

what you have uncovered is indeed the sender unit, if you undo the circle latch? you will get to the sender unit.

I also have faulty guages (who doesnt!?!) and havn't replaced sender units yet, but atleast my low fuel light comes on so i know it isn't the sender unit..

I have also drained my main tank but stays stuck on quarter full.

Do you have a GXL model? do you get low fuel (10litre) warning light come on?

The maintank sender unit is under the middle seat, more towards the drivers side, you will have to remove your seats if you havnt already to gain access.

Im not sure on 100series or GXLs because i believe all gxl subtanks drain into the main, unlike standard models have 2 seperate tanks and direct feeds.

Yes it is a GXL, The light comes on somewhere around the 10lt mark.

I didn't realise the red light was seperate from the sender unit, it does not appear to be so in my GXL as it has come on before when there was at least a quarter ot sub tank left.

The sub and main are completely seperate in my 4be.

Still hoping there is a resident expert who can give me a clue to solving this problem.

Mayber it is as simple as they never really changed the sender unit????

In a Toyota workshop do they have to drain the sub tank before they remove the sender unit, cause they told me they had to. OH&S ?????
