My freind has a 3 litre tdi an he blew his moter at 100,000kms,he rebuilt his gearbox at 120,000 the gearbox in the 3 litre is alot smaller than the one in the td42.

ask Roly, hes blown nearly everythign up on his 3.0!~ New motor from Jap, gearbox, numerous airflow sensors ($1000+ea), air con pulley bearings, same price..

what a unit...

Gearbox looks exaclty the same externally size wise and there would only be differences in gear ratios and also clutch assembly would be different to cater for the two piece flywheel on the 3.0TDi.

My friends 4.2TD had exactly the same gearbox problem with 5th and I am sure there are others who have the same. It would make no sense to put a gearbox into a truck that has more power and torque than a 4.2TD would it. Maybe more 3.0TDi are doing the 5th gear because one there a shitz more of them on the road and two they make more power.

I think buyng any manual pre 2001 you are going to have the G/B problem 4.2 or 3.0.

I must admit though trying to get correct info on this from the horses mouth is at times difficult and this aint just Nissan, Toyota used to play just as coy when had my hilux.

Yeah,

Roly hasn't had the greatest time ever with his 3.0, However i would go the 4.2. The reason being if you look at the power curves of the two engines the 4.2 works alot less over a greater rev range, thus bound to last longer and accept more in the way of tweeking. Remember alos that the 4.2 has been roung for more than a decade, and you would be hard pressed to find a problem with them that isn't documented.

I drove a 3lt on a mine site the other day and was not very impressed! It reved hard but until you got the boost up, it had nothing! GO THE 4.2 OR YOU WILL BE SORRY WHEN OFF ROAD!

I used to have a Mazda Bravo 2.5 Ltr turbo diesel. As with most small 4 cylinder turbo diesels there is next to no torque below 2,000 rpm. Have driven the 3.0tr patrol and it had the same problem.
They'll be fine, power wise, around town, but when off road you'll always have to be careful to keep the revs up so that you don't stall it. This means going faster up hill than you would ideally like.

Guys,

Any update in this problem with the late model GUs?

I'm primarily after a 4.2TD but price is kind of making me reconsider other options. As an alternative I'm looking at a couple of MY03 3.0TDs and was wondering if all their earlier probs have been sorted yet.

Any further info would be great!

Cheers. :D

i was tossing up between the 3.0 and the 4-2 but was speaking to a diesel guru and he said they call it the grenade. he also said the pump to replace is something like 6 grand-thats a bank loan to me. 4.2 was $1500. What blew my mind was when he said a Td5 pump was over $10000? also was saying that the 3.0 runs a constant 26 psi. lots of wires seems to equal lots of dollars.
they can make them less Grimace with a dtonic thingaby as well.

Lot of people talk about what they heard, but don't really know much.

3.0 lt has had it's teething problems as did 4.2 long time ago.
I have 2002 3.0 lt and am more than happy with it.
I take it offroad and don't have problems that everyone talks about.
It's about learning to drive a vehicle that you have.
I've been on trips with 4.2 td where 4.2 had to shift to low range uphill, becouse it was "running out of puff" and I did the same hill in high range easily.
Also if you stick 3.0lt in low range and select 1st gear,it will idle up any hill without stoling.Try to do that in 4.2 or even petrol.

PS,don't buy a car that suits someone else.Think about use of your car and than decide what engine will suit you best.

Personally if I had to chose between 4.2td and 4.8 petrol,I'd go petrol.
Petrol could be even cheaper to run,let alone lot more power

Well actually its your choice but by the looks of things you have kept your old GQ for ages and your probably going to do the same with the GU.

I doubt the 3.0 will make it anywhere near 500,000 without everything being overhauled a few times.

but your choice if its long term go the 4.2 short term (5 years) go the 3.0

That's very valid point.
4.2 will last longer. So far no one knows how long would 3.0 lt last.
I usually change cars every 3 years and in about 5 months time 3.0lt Patrol will be 3 years old,but at the moment I am thinking of keeping this car little bit longer.
