we were hitting it pretty hard with a heavy hammer...do you put the axle in the vice horizontally or vertically .....

I`ve only ever helled it by the axle in one hand and hit it with the sledge hammer in the other hand. If holding it straight don`t work hold it so that the axle is at a slight angle but the cv is vertical. Make shore it is a good hit, don`t be scared. Just watch your feet cause they farken hert when/if they land on them

Best way I have found is by using a piece of pipe and sliding the axle shaft into it and using a little force: out pops the Cv.

If you look at the round cross member above the rear tyre, it is the perfect size and you can slide the axle into it while holding onto the Cv, slide it with a bit of force and the axle will pop out.

Get a piece of 50mm pipe aprox 1.5mtrs long place the axle inside the pipe all the way up to the CV then drop the other end of the pipe on the concrete. This is the easiest way and if you havent got it this way your not hitting it hard enough. The short side takes more than the long side. Do not drop the CV into the pipe you will damage the Bearing Cage. Also i would be carefull hitting the CV with a hammer for the same reason.

Or you can use the shock mount crossmember on hilux's after late '84 before this the tube has 2 bolts running through it and it wont work.

If you are replacing the CV then chances are you will need new inner spring clips as well as they usually snap when removing the CV.

Where does one buy the inner spring clips?

Seems simple, but who stocks something like that?

i reckon putting a small tack weld near the shaft end of the splines is an easier and less violent alternative
