4wd not engage

Well as you might recall I had a mate just by a 4runner 92' 2.8 diesel. We went mud bashing on thursday arvo after work and got a bit stuck. When we were getting out i noticed the backs where spinning but not the fronts and that was when we were sitting still ie. stuck.
We had the hubs locked ect the little 4wd light came on when we stuck it in 4wd. so my question is "WHATS GOING ON" the back has a LSD so both sides were spinning. the front wheels however went "driving" at all. so after digging mud out for 30 minutes we got out, if the fronts were spinning we shouldent have got boged. been in other 4bys, locked hubs ect dumped it in 4wd and off we went!
any ideas whats going on?
cheers - Mat

How is the 4WD engaged? Be it electric, mechanically etc..? How do you get into low range in your Hilux?

its changes via lever beside the gear lever.

most(maybe even all, im yet to see dif, but i may be wrong) of the ifs luxs/4runners are autohubs. they engage automaticaly if you stick the little level in 4low, and if in hi-range they engage if you hit the button on the side of the lever.
my mates lux has a prob where it only goes into 4wd 40% of the time, im pretty sure its his solonoid has gone at worst case, but seeing as it engages sometimes i rekon his contacts just need cleaning up...

yeah you gotta jump out and turn the little red hub locks, theres no buttons of any sort anywhere.
so whats the go with the solonoids?

ahh ok then i take back what i said, you can get manual hubs!!!
in that case, are you 100% sure that both hubs were totaly engaged in the 'lock'/'4x4' position? it only takes one to be not fully engaged for 4wd to not work.

only other thing i can think of is either ya transfercase aint workin, or ya diff has blown.... but i doubt the 2nd one

maybe there are no CV's was the drive shaft turning? if it wasnt then its your transfer. If it was turning then I would imagine either the CV's are gone or your locking hubs arnt working. if the diff was blown it would be making noise.

so check CV's or transfer case or the locking hubs. the diff was fine just turning, its a LSD so both wheels were spinning like your head from a hangover. just the front, its IFS so no solid axle stuff. it was rather dissapointing i thought
'you beauty' mud but no it wasent to be.
thanks for the help once agian fellas

turn your cv's by hand then lock your hubs they should lock up if not its your hubs. or turn your drive shaft by hand and have someone lock it in 4b it should lock up if not its your transfer.
hope this helps

YES, but is it a single forward-backward with 4wd button on knob (electric) or recerse J pattern with no 4wd button on knob?

he said it has manual hubs, there will be no electric 4wd button on the knob. that button is for locking the auto hubs

The standard 4runner comes with manual or "full time" hubs (ADD). If it's standard with manual hubs, then it's not ADD, but can still have an electric transfer shift actuator.
If it has ADD and someone in the past wanted the benefits of manual hubs, then it would probably have an electric shift actuator.
We need to hear from Mr. octurbo to tell us if it has the button on the transfer shifter or not.

In 1 of the posts he says there's no buttons anywhere.
There's no buttons on my brother's 4runner either, it has manual locking hubs, maybe the hubs are gone? who knows.
This guys 4runner must be late 80's or early 90's

Yep, OK.
No buttons, then it could be;
Transfer is broken (not likely)
diff is broken (would be noisy)
axle is broken (highly likely, have seen it)
CV is broken (would be noisey)
Hub is broken (low possibility)
Front driveshaft is stolen (serious!, not likely, but have seen it before)

Even if it did have the electric actuator, the 4WD light can not come on unless it has operated.

its a 92 model. Iv got mates with rooted CVs in there normal cars and i know the sound and theres no CV knocking noise ect. theres really no drivetrain noise at all. next time i see old mate ill give everything a look over and report back.
thanks once agian
