Electric Vs PTO Winches ???

Which is a better winch to have on your truck ?
I was talking to a bloke the other day about winches , and he was saying that a PTO winch shytes all over the Electric model ( for general 4x4 driving and touring )
I was saying that with an electric winch, if your truck stops you have just that "little" bit left in the battery to get you out of trouble, where as with a PTO if the truck stops, its all over.
What are your opinions of both -- Pro`s and Cons ??????
What are your experiences ????

Overall, PTO in the real world. If your motor has stopped and you can't start it again, an electric winch won't get you far anyway.
But I agree it's debatable.

Many PTO winches have two inputs - one from the gearbox and one from a hand crank. Will get you further than an electric winch with a dead battery!

and if your engine stops and that litle bit ov battery power does get you out, how do you then restart your engine to get any further?? go the pto

A hand crank. Jeeeesssssuuuuusss. Now that would be hard work.

I like my electric in case i get water in the dizzy and it wont start in a bog hole. I ahve winched mine out several times with the engine off (obviously not up massive hills) and it has always had enough juice to start again. Im pretty sure the 50 amps my alt put out would be doing stuff all on a long winch. Also a lot of people run 2 batteries so you would have a spare if needed. When we did our tassie trip the 80 series with us had a pto and it kept popping out after a dunk in the mud
