Just got a 2002 GU with the 4.2 Turbo. I can't find anything in the paperwork to tell if it's a series 2 or 3. How do you tell? Thanks.

Easiest way to tell a series 3 from a series 2..
Rear tail lights.
If they are clear/clear/red on both sides then its probably a s3. A s3 will also have crystal (parabolic) headlights (as opposed to the s2 having glass diffuser headlights).
Also the s3 had 2 different TD42 engines. First run of s3 had the TD42T. The second run scored the TD42Ti which is the intercooled motor.
Cheers

IDENTIFYING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MODELS
The GU Nissan Patrol can be seen here and come in three different so called Series. The series I came out in 1997 and had the 2.8 litre diesel, 4.2 litre diesel and the 4.5 litre petrol engine.
The Series II Nissan Patrol came out in 2000 and was the first vehicle offered with the new 3.0 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine. Nissan retained the 4.2 diesel in both turbo and non turbo and the 4.5 litre petrol engines.
The Series III was released in late 2001 and has the so called revised 3.0 litre turbo diesel, 4.2 litre diesel and the new 4.8 litre petrol engines.
The easiest way to determine if it is a Series III is by the tail lights. The Series III has both side rear tail lights (the upper ones) clear. The earlier models had predominantly red lights with a thin strip of clear on one side for the reverse light. There is also some difference in the front indicators and park lens's. A closer look at the Series III 3.0 litre tells us that there is an extra oil sensor in the engine block on the left side. You can see it just underneath the turbo. This sensor screws into the banjo bolt that secures the oil feed line to the turbo onto the engine block. The early 3.0 litres never had this sensor. There are some other changes how-ever these are the easiest to denote the difference.
