Engine swap 4g63-->6g72

Post by zebra »

hi guys, got an engine swap question, which is a lil bit of a wierd one.

I've seen the idea of a 4g63 bounced around here a bit.

The thing is i actually have a swb gen 1 with an efi g63b (starion motor) already in it.. goes ok, but its reaching the end of its tether, oil pump is slowly on the way out ( i love having an oil pressure guage, dont you? :D ), and theres a valvetrain noise also (suspicion this is oil pump related).

So here are my questions, haha yea theres a few...

Is a 6g72 carby or efi?

What exactly would be required to transplant a 6g72 in?

I was thinking that i would need

1. Engine
2. Engine Mounts
3. Wiring Harness
4. Exhaust
5. Starter Motor
6. Computer if EFI

anything i missed :? ?

what about the trans? i have a km145 box in at the moment, which is also on its way out too so im figuring new box.

Is there some sort of adapter plate that i can use to mount the 3 litre up to another model gearbox (thinking V5MT1 here), or will i have to stick with the km145?

I read somewhere about a 5th gear overdrive, are these still available/kickin round?

My names Zed by the way, hows it all goin :)

Cheers for any input folks

Later model Gen 1s came from the factory with a 6G72 and V5MT1 - so there's no reason you couldn't squeeze them into yours. AFAIK, all 6G72s are EFI.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the Mitsubishi 3.0 - 12V or 24V. For all the hassle, either go a Commodore V6, or work one of the larger Mitsubishi 4s. The 4G63 manifolds are reported to bolt up to the 16V heads on the 2.4i 4G64 found in the Triton - in your position, I'd start there.

For which he should use the bigger gearbox & transfer, and probably rear axle too. Sounds like a HUUUUUGE job!

Cheers for the reply. However everything on the 4g63 is in bad nick, wouldnt want to touch it anyway.im going to rip out everything cept air con, nothing is staying from the previous drive train really. would quite rather go with either the emotec or the 6g72, but the ecotec would require some substantial modifications would it not.?

Furthermore, it will be on a budget... say about 3g for everything...so it will be a wreckers job. no labour, i can do it myself for the most part.

ecotec is tempting, as i have worked on these motors a little bit before.
