Just picked up a bargin GU wagon, motor blown and its been hit in the rear not to bad but both barn doors are dented. So now it's time to do the big cut down into a extra cab (comp truck style). Does any body have any suggestions as to who does this kind of work around Melbourne - not sure if i should be talking to 4wd shops or panel beaters??????

Where are the vic boys ? They will know for sure.

Ontrack in Keilor, Smithies Outback in Cranbourne, KJ's in Geelong, Aus 4wd in Bayswater, Cheezy (not sure where his workshop is). They all do good work, just comes down to price and convenience i suppose.

I say DIY is the way to go! Lots of work but very satisfying if you take your time.

However, On Track do very good work, have a look at their website http://ontrack4x4.net.au/default.htm

Good luck with the chop!

coming from a different industry there is nothing more annoying than spending half an hour on the phone explaining shit, go visit in person man, will give you a MUCH better idea of the service and work the shop does.

I heard PGS in mornington are currently chopping a GU at the moment, so im sure they could give you some tips.

Yeah I'm doing one at the moment, it all depends on what you are after. The owner of this vehicle wants a stock type look with a larger cab.

I've made the corner radiuses, back panel and used the geniune nissan ute window frame so we can fit a factory window and seal. Its just tacked together at the moment as the back panel its coming off again to make the cage work easier. You can get the idea of the shape though.

I've used the origional back but adjusted the angle to get the right look.

Hope this helps

this might be a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.. why chop a GU to a ute body, when you could just get a GU ute body from stock ?.. seen it done to GQ's aswell but never quite worked out why.. maybe people cbf'd moving bits from one car to the next.. but its a boat load of work.

becasue, you can leave etra cab space which you can not et from a factry ute, extra cab style

Cause you can't fit a cage and people in who are over 5 foot 10, if its a GQ its 5 foot 3, unless you can drive with your knees around your ankles, not to mention the diffuculty in keeping a wagon panels straight.

could you take the back wall out of a ute cab and extend it?Is it harder to add than subtract panel work and are cabs hard to find?

I have a GU ute and have thought about this.

Would be a good option if it can be done for a reasonable cost.

If you extend the cab you need 2 joints, if you cut back a wagon you only need one, not to mention utes are typically dearer than wagons.

Is there a rule of thumb to how much room to leave behind the front doors, the pgs one looks around 8 to 10 inches i have seen others that are less.

It's a lot harder for several reasons but the main ones are you need 2 joins meaning less strength and the other main one is having to join the floor pan which are usually uneven which means a lot of stuffing around getting your new section to meet.

It can be done with one join though but it is very expensive because you have to do it the same way you do a cut & shut except to have to cut through the roof instead of the front pillars or rear quarter pillars like you do on a cut & shut. This is done by using to cab bodies rather then one like the conventional way. This way you just cut the 2 at the length you want them and join them together. This is the easier way of the 2 if you wanted to lengthen a ute but means you need 2 cabs.

I hope this makes sense

Cheers Mick.

Nice work so far Joel, If I was to do mine again I would use the GQ ute back window, very good option. We just used lexan for a back window, finish isn't great to be honest, your option would be better.

Thanks, we have done them with Lexan too, did a GQ dual cab and had to keep the back pretty square to maximize the tray size. My cheap ass used UV stabilized perspex on my own car.. about $90 for charcol tinted, its an odd shape for mine too.
