*** Help with waterproof igntions on 3.9 V8 - HEI ? ***

Looking at doing the conversion to the buick HEI but just wanted to get some input how waterproof it makes the engine. Can anyone shed some light on their experience with the Buick dissy VS Rover dissy in terms of waterproof? Also and reccomendations on where to purchase on ebay?

I'm not aware of any on ebay unless you buy a buick 350 hei from US ebay, i had a couple of Buick V6 HEI's lying around and also got an oldsmobile one off ebay to use the shaft in a V6 body so that it fits the rover. Mine is not in a car yet but f you search OL there was a post by a guy in NZ who said he could hose the dizzy with running water without any missing.

The HEI is heaps less likely to miss when externaly wet than a stock one. I even opened my plug gaps to 0.050" and Ive never had it miss although I haven't actually completly submerged the engine. I got it sent from the states thru Ebay, I think around $200 ish overhauld with new leads cap etc. Just put a rover drive cog on the bottom. I had to chop out the inlet manifold on the 4.4.

Hi i am just chasing a little more info on the conversion to using the ignition module to run the megasquirt. I will be using Delco but the outputs will be the same. Did you change from a 4(or 5 pin) ign module to the gm 7 pin? From what i can see this is the obvious set up. Did you weld up the vacuum and centrigual advance or modify in some other way?
Ive left the 4 pin module in there but it's not currently being used. The signal for the megasquirt is coming directly from the variable reluctor under the module. This signal is very weak so Ive had to sheild those 2 wires running into the efi unit. Ive disconected the vac line and locked out the centrifugal weights by just cable tieing them in. In hindsight It's probably best to set it up to recieve the rpm signal after it's been amplified by the 4 pin (or 4,7pin) module.
Finaly, the megasquirt controls the coil.
It was a steep learning curve, but quite inexpensive.

That's what I did with mine, although mine is just the early rover dizzy with the GM module in the aluminum box. Then the MS is basically set up to just treat it as a hall effect signal.

Thanks Euan and others appreciate the info. I am currently in the process of fitting Northstar Coil packs and Delco injection computer, but am concerned about getting the crank sensors right. Will post up once all running. Thanks again
