Hey all, I'm running a 253 v8 in my hilux, cooling with a rear mounted radiator, what is the normal running temperature range for the engine.

Thanks Matt

Going by my memory, I think they had a 80 deg thermostat.

trident website will have a temp listing for that engine.

So around that temp.

What is normal?? Most manufactures run their engines around 96-102 degrees C. A stock 253 thermostat is 96 Degrees, most people go cooler but it isn't always necessary, a pressurized cooling system won't boil untill well over 100 degrees, 30% antifreeze and its higher again, V6 and V8 late commodores don't switch the fans on until 101 degrees. If you have a good cooling system and tune you will make more power and get better economy if the engine temp is up at 96-100 degrees. A cooler thermostat dosent stop a car from overheating if it has a faulty cooling system, it just may take a little longer to warm the water up the extra temp to the danger zone. Once the thermostst is open whether 96 or 80 degrees the water flow is the same. Problems with the 253 and 308's are the quality of the water pump impeller design of many aftermarket pumps. There are also high flow thermostats from Tridon which I recommend more than going too cold in thermostat.

Cheers

Thanks, the engine is running at 96 degrees all day, with the thermo fans switching on and off when required, i have an electric water pump also inline, if i need it.
