I need ideas ....

i want to get peoples thoughts on what truck to buy. im looking for the following

- 10k - 20k
- Ute (or have the ability to tow a trailer)
- Manual - preferably diesel
- truck to be used for Medium 4wd trips and beach camping

My thoughts so far have been

- An old 75series (comfort...and im tall?)
- Isuzu MU (cheap)
- old zook wagon ( Maybe a bit old)
- 73 series

Any other suggestions?

OK, if you're only into medium 4wding, don't rule out IFS vehicles (such as the MU ;) )

For that money, you should be able to find a nice Hilux, Jackaroo, Pajero, Prado, ???? and have enough money left over for some decent suspension and tyres.

For instance, I reckon $20k could build a 10 year old Pajero td which could tow a trailer along any "medium" track you could find without raising a sweat.

thanks for the reply. I should have been clearer. I would only tow a box trailer if it wasnt a ute. i play a bit with house reno's, so a trailer would be used for hardware trips mainly..

My Father was going to buy a BJ73 a while ago, but didn't because of lack of leg room and the associated lack of comfort due to this. I drove the thing and didn't have a problem. I'm a short arse though, although my dads not exactly tall.

Zooks don't tow too well. I tow a 6x4 with mine full of camping gear. Does it, but its as slow as can be, and the standard suspension rides on the bump stops (with the legal draw bar weight, and 2 blokes on the rear seat). A Vitara would tow better than a Sierra, and are also rated to tow more.

Just from what you said above, a dual cab ute sounds like what you want. You get a ute, you could also tow a trailer if need be, and you get 5 seats to boot. Also they are usually a manual diesel, and are well suited to camping. That leaves you with the likes of: Hilux, Rodeo, Navara, Triton, Bravo/Courier, Defender, Have I missed any? I wont delve into which of them is better, I know what my pick would be, but It would not be everyone elses pick.

I say find a possible option, then test drive one, even an overpriced one, just for the sake of driving it. Then you might be able to cross it off your list immediatly because of something about it that just anoyes you.
